Well water vs. City water service

Have hardwood floors, 1700 sq ft & 4 bedrooms now! - Previously had 2 bedrooms and only 1400 sq. ft. AND outrageous utility bills!

This summer I bought a lovely home - got it for a great price (foreclosure) and have no mortgage payments. (Of course, my old house (currently being rented to a family member)is still on the market, but I owe very little on it and that's a whole 'nother discussion!) The new house has a well (the water is absolutely delicious - the previous owners had invested in a water softener too!) - no more city water bill! And I also have a septic system, which also is a new experience for me. I love NOT having to pay the outrageous rates any more that I used to have at the old place. Here's the issue though: our mayor wants the whole city to be on city water services. Part of his reasoning is the pollution and negative impact on the environment - namely, the St. John's River, which runs right through the middle of our city, Jacksonville, Florida. I'm sure the other reasons are combination political and financial gains for parties unknown!I moved to an older neighborhood so they are currently putting in the water pipes and whatnot. (What a mess!) The plan is to make all of us convert - I found out that I cannot sell this house (not that I plan to any time soon!) nor do any major repairs to my current well or septic system - I MUST convert - at a major cost to me - around 10 to 20 thousand dollars (that they are so graciously allowing us to make payments on when we pay the bills.) Sure, I understand protecting our environment. But, gee whiz! What's your opinion?

It is terrible that they are forcing you to do this. But possibly it is something that must be done. Isn't that what taxes pay for. I think it is terrible that they are forcing homeowners to pay for their decisions. Hopefully the payments will be low enough that you won't notice it to much. I certainly do not blame you for being upset about this.
