Help regarding installing Windows XP!

I recently bought myself a new dell laptop featuring Windows vista. I tried installing XP into it but could not do it. The error message says XP is unable to detect any hard drive.I tried removing the Vista partition and reformatting and then tried installing XP but the same problem persists. I asked one of my friends who has got a lenovo laptop with him to try installing XP. He too got stuck with the same problem. Now, i don't know where else to go. Any idea. Help me out friends..
