What's the effective treatment for running nose?

My son is about 4.5 years old. And he often has a running nose and it's quite frustrating for me. I don't know which way can make him feel better or even get rid of it. Especially it's suffering to fall asleep as you can imagine. Because the breath is troublesome for him when he is sleeping. He doesn't have a cold. Perhaps his nose is sensitive.

Well, I too have the same problem. You can check with the doctor to see if it is an allergy problem. Then make sure your home is as dust free as possible. Usually hot water will help to clear the nose as well. And lots of tissue paper to blow it out. Do not suck it in. Cos you are not getting rid of it. So clearing it out rather than sucking it in would help alleviate the problem a little as well. The other one is to build up the immunity of your son. He could be weak in certain aspects and the nose dribbling is just one of the symptoms. Get Chinese herbs to help in building your boy's immunity. Ginseng, cordyscepts (Dong Cong Chao), or some combination to do that. Consult your chinese medicine hall si fu and he will be able to advise better. For me, I just get some ginseng and boil chicken soup and it helped a little. No more aircon when sleeping. At least not until his dripping nose gets better. If all that still does not help, then medication may. I am using Piriton that is quite good for my use. I do not know if it will work for your son. Consult the doctor and he can advise you better.

Then it is a matter of training to get him to blow his nose. The more he can clear it, the better he will feel. Like I said, it could be a issue of a weak immune system. Or as the chinese saying goes "Ti Zhi Luo". Try giving him some tonic soups to drink. It may help. It helped me, it may help your son too.

Perhaps my son is still little now. He is not willing to learn to blow his nose. This is why he will feel worse. I brought my son to see the doctors for many times. But it's not so useful. Soon his nose will be back to the same problem again.

He probably has an allergy. You need to take hime to an allerfist. He will take things away from his diet to see if he gets better and to see what he is allergic to. He may also do some scratch tests to see what heis allregies are. then , you just keep him away from those things.

I can imagine the torment. It's more likely that your son has allergic reactions to the air around. Dust or pollens from flowers can trigger the reactions. My grandma once told me a native trick which has kept me from always having a runny nose. I tried inhaling the steam coming from a freshly cooked rice and afterwards, I could feel the relief. Somehow, this has helped stop the runny nose nuissance eversince. The best practice, nevertheless, is to consult your family physician.

Breathe Right Strips - Breathe Right Strips Box
If it isn't a cold, it could be an allergic reaction. Here in the States there are two products that can help. One is Vick's vapor rub. It is a gel that you rub on the chest and it's vapors soothe your cough And help yo breathe through your nose.Another product is Breathe Right. They just brought out a strip for kids. They are strips that go across the nose and they help you breathe. The problem is that I don't know if either are available in China.

first, you need to rule out any serious medical problems. make sure you take him to the doctors first. then, to be honest, a runny nose is a good thing because if it doesnt run, it will lead to sinus infections. i think you should get it checked. (allergy tests?)

Is he allergic to something? I used to have running nose when smell some strong odour or smoke. Sometimes, excessive dust in the air will cause that too. This happens when I am doing some housekeeping job in the house. Or, when I am in newly painted room. My mum taught me a very simple remedy for this. Drinking some warm water will stop the running nose. Beside, if it's due to allergy, you should find out the source of the contaminants and eliminate it.

Then you should consider buying an air purifier. I have seen such products and they are efficient to filter the air particles. I have read articles about the research of air quality in our home. The indoor air is actually 5 times dirtier than the fresh air outside. That's why we need to have indoor air purifier. Hope this will resolve your son's allergic running nose problem.

Check with an ent if he has a deviated septum. Teach him some breathing exercises [in a proper manner] and give him some hot soup with pepper powder in it at night. We use home remedies like inhaling some herbs[as carefully as a child can take it].Then of course we apply vicks on the chest and nose. You can also apply eucalyptus oil gently on the surface of the nose and make him inhale steam [with a few drops of eucalyptus oil added to the boiling water].Try all this. The first ones suggested are the best.Even a deviated septum would give less trouble with proper Pranayama.[my son has this deviated septum and the ENT said that it could be corrected only through surgery after he was 20 years old.[when I saw hi in 1988. He is more than twenty and even now he does get the occasional blockage but he keeps it at bay with Pranayama

Oh I suspect that your son has some allergic rhinitis that causes him much discomfort. I think your pedia could give you some medication that could relieve you from doing that.

Hello youless. I think that it is better for you to take you son to the doctor to see what is wrong with your son. The sooner, the better. I suggest that the doctor examine your son's nose to see if has any problem with his nose. A good health is worth anything else. Take care, friend. See you.

In fact I already brought my son to see different doctors for many times. But it doesn't help so much. This is why I want to know other methods.

youless, I think you will need to determine if he is having either a case of acute sinuses or allergies. The latter being determined by observing what are you having around the house i.e. carpets, furry toys, furry pets, woolen stuffs, pollen plants and etc. If you cannot remove them, then maybe vacuum your house everyday and install an air purifier unit in his bedroom might just help alleviate his problem. As for the case of acute sinuses, the symptoms will remain if what I have mentioned earlier are observed or absent. Then, you will need to bring him to see the doctor and have it medically treated. As winter is approaching, it would help if you could keep him warm at all times and not let him catch a chill. Hope the above will be of help. Take care.

Perhaps this problem only occurs in winter. Perhaps the changing temperature and the wind have an effect on my son's nose, too.

we have the same problem and experience with our sons. but my son has allergic rhinitis, which attacks every dawn until noon, then it'll be gone and be back before he sleeps. the thing that triggers his allergy is the weather, plus the fact that he is asthmatic means that i have to control his allergy so he won't have asthma attacks. you might as well bring your son to the doctor so you will be advised what to do and give him. by the way, my son is only 5 years old, yet he has two medicines used for maintenance.

Since the doctors just give my son medicines, but the effect won't last for a long time. And the problems haven't been solved yet.

Hi! Your son seems to be very sensitive toward the environment. For some, it happens during the mornings when the air is chill and fresh. For some, it happens due to body heat, too. Well, I would suggest this as I found helpful dealing with my own self when I was young. It's simple: A GLASS OF 100% ORANGE JUICE! Reason: Orange is acidic in nature (Citric Acid). And that proves to be effective to deal with the body heat and proper digestion of food. This shouldn't be consumed everyday, but at least thrice in a week. Else, it would cause acidity to the child's stomach. Another choice: If you have Eucalyptus Oil, you must just put a drop or two in a bowl of steamy water to inhale. Reason: This vapor of medicinal nature would cleanse the nose by killing the germs/bacteria that cause him running nose. Please be cautious that he shouldn't feel uncomfortable inhaling the strong smell of menthol in it. And the last, it's better to serve him PURIFIED WATER instead of BOILED WATER, in case you were too cautious! Reason: Boiled water won't carry oxygen or nutrients like the natural water which retains the essential elements in it. So, try these, and adhere to which helps you better till you find your son's nose gently walking, than running!!! (Just kidding!) Good luck!
