Hi Friends,
Wikipedia now placed a button for donations in every page. They have targeted a total of six million dollars. Till now they have collected 3+ million dollars. I to have donate some money as I got more and more information and benefits from their site.
But I wonder why they are asking for donations. Why do they need 6 million dollars. Most of the content on the site was posted by users only. Everything is free of cost in that site. Then why do they require donations. Is it was for maintenance or something else. Do any one know answer.
Thank you

Many sites have Wikipedia. Wich site you are donating?I think without knowing the purpose you should not donate. There is risk to respond any free of cost offer. Some time in the name of free offer the hackers cheat the users. So you should be cautious about free offer.

I didn't know Wikipedia wanted donations, and I wouldn't give any because I don't ever use Wikipedia. It worries me that the content is supplied by members of the general public, and there have been times when incorrect information is posted. I know they try to get rid of the rubbish before it's there for too long, but I've still always preferred to trust other sites.

I am sorry my dear friend, guybrush. I think your opinion is not good. Out of three top encyclopaedias, britannica has 5 incorrect information/mistakes per one thousand articles, where as in wikipedia, they had only three mistakes.
While any user posting matter in wikipedia, they have to submit the source as link, and these people in wikipedia will review it and they will add a tag if they haven't reviewed that page. You will find any matter that wasn't reviewed as "This page was not yet reviewed".
So I believe in wikipedia, and the reviewed matter in that site, and I regularly visit that site, when I need information in internet. Thank you.

Hi ElicBxn. Sorry for my delay response.
They are not asking one thousand dollars. They are asking six million dollars for maintenance. They had the staff of 26 members, and they are running wiki project which includes almost another twenty sites.

I have not really tried donating since I feel like it's gonna be waste of money. But if I were richer I would have donated something to them.

Yes the information is free and provided by members of the general public. But someone has to check the information toe nsure that it is accurate which means they have staff to pay. In addition as you say there will also have serversto pay as wel as upkeep and maintenance of the website. All of that costs money and it has to come from somewhere.
Like you I wil not be donating any money to wikipedia either. My reason is a bit different though as I simply do not use that website for information. Yes it is probably a valuable source of information for many people and I know some would use it on a regular basis. Those people can donate if they so desire but I cannnot see any reason why I should make a monetary donation for something that I do not use.
The information might be free but everything else to do with the website would be costing a lot of money.

Well no…guess I have been selfish and this post really rubs it in. they are of great service and I myself have lost count of how many times they have solved my problems. Guess I’ll be a good girl and control my greed a bit and donate to them next time I earn here

Hi adihindu..for one I have no idea why they want donations and know for one that it is something I wouldn't do there are more urgent people who need donations, wikipedia don't really need it, they are not poor hungry, or abused in any way.if users help the site that is all they need not donations, but that is my opinion...littleowl

probably to cover the website cost like the domain name.. some places can be hundreds of dollars a MONTH just to have a website on there and with as much info as they have im sure they are paying a big amount.. and they may have employees to research and make sure the info is correct etc..
i havent donated any money because i dont have a dime to give

It must be costing them money for the bandwidth they're taking up and I doubt that their site is free. I don't donate and don't get enough info there that I feel I should donate but I'm glad you're making the effort.

I can donate to Wikipedia, providing that they will allow members to post their own links hehehe. Just imagine the traffic they are getting every day. At least, we could get some benefits.
