How many godparents is enough?

I have been to baptismal parties before and I was really amazed how people can acquire such numbers of god parents? they have a lot of friends. I have no kid yet but when I do I only plan to have a few godparents and I think I will only get friends that I can trust with my kids. Not people whom I think have a lot of money and that can give a lotof gifts to my kids. It is getting popular here that parents get godparents for the status of the people. How about you think what is the decent number of godparents for the kids? Have you tried getting a hundred? LOL

I am not a Catholic so I really do not accept invitation to be a godparent to a baptismal of child. For one, my faith does not support this practice of Catholics because it is not biblical. I however agree to be a Sponsor when it is a Child Dedication which is what is being done in our church and in other Christian churches. But I am also very careful. Once I learned that they are getting too many sponsors and obviously want to make money out of child dedication I do not allow myself to be used. I always find a way to politely turn down a request which is obviously made to raise fund.

i know what you mean. i've met people who get godparents who they don't even personally know or are not really close to but who are rich enough and would probably give great gifts for the child. it's such a turn-off whenever that happens. with my kids, my husband and i only invited close friends to be their godparents. although i must admit we went overboard with our eldest child because he has 30 godparents! LOL on retrospect, i guess that happened because it was our first baby and we wanted as many of our friends to be his "second parents". it was also a case of "why did you invite him/her and not me?!" so we had to keep adding and adding because there were friends who volunteered to be godparents! (i guess it's also due to being the first to get married among our group) i'm glad that we have enough friends left over for the other 3 kids that followed :p but we only got 5 pairs each per child thereafter.

I think that it depends. Sure, I don't think that you need 100 different godparents. But some people like having more than set of godparents, which is fine. So long as it's within reason.
