How often do you clean out your fridge?

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the US and our fridge was full of food. Mostly old food mind you, and the shelves were completely disgusting and gross. I decided since I was told to clean out old food to take it one step farther and pull out the shelves and wipe them down with hot soap and water to finally clean them off. Those shelves haven't been washed in months. Maybe years. I can't even think of the last time that fridge was actually wiped out and cleaned thoroughly.
So how often do you clean out your fridge? Do you have a cleaning routine that involves your kitchen? Do you tend to leave food in your fridge or do you actually clean yours out from time to time so you don't have to deal with bad food.

I have a fridge that has a vegetable draw, that needs to be cleaned at least once a week otherwise I go to get something and find really yuki stuff. The top part of the fridge gets done about twice a month. My Mom had this system of cleaning her fridge the day before shopping so she would clean the fridge and check what she needed from the store at the same time!!

That's actually a really good idea. One, if you clean before you shop, you don't have to worry about moving too many things around the fridge. You can clean things out and safely put things back. Then, you also can see what you need before shopping too. I may have to consider doing this at some point.

I clean it out once a month with soapy hot water. I use Pinesol to clean it out with. I love to have my fridge smelling clean and fresh, especially during the holiday season. If, it is not that dirty then I will clean it every two to three months. But, I will never let it go longer than that. I have to have a very clean fridge. It is very important to my health and well being that I do.

i think i don't like chemical additive to clean my fridge, what ever we do to clean the fridge, may be there is a little bit left in the fridge. I may be contamination our food. My fridge always clean with water sometime to remove the food odor, i like to use like pappermint leave, or orange leaves.

Could probably do it more often. I tend to go through maybe twice a month. My hubby is a big believer in finishing leftovers. So it can be an easy job. Wipe downs are a monthly chore. I have done it less lately. With a big prego belly I find it harder to bend!

Not having too many leftovers in the fridge would help a lot to keep it clean. At least with your husband eating the leftovers there is less chance of them spilling and makikng a mess in the fridge.
Good luck with the pregnancy. I imagine it would be hard to clean it if you are n an advanced stage of your pregnancy too. I remember that my ex-wife had a lot of problems doing certain things after a few months when she started to get a little larger in the front. lol

I've decided to clean out my fridge at the beginning of every month. Since we just moved into a nice clean new home at the beginning of November I think I will clean it out on the first of each month. Even if it not at all that dirty, I will still wipe it out.
Have a great day

Oh I forgot to mention about taking food out of the fridge when it comes to leftovers. If they are a day or two at the most old, say I have potatoes that I put in a container, then the next time I make potatoes or whatever it was in the container, I will add it to the new and generate more food. That way it's not waisting either.

Hi!yeah,it is a routine for me to clean our fridge for at least once a month. It scares me to think that there might be lots of bacteria growing in there if it is not being clean regularly since almost all our foods are stock in there.Of course I clean it with soap and water, then I wipe the sides with baking soda to absorb all those bad odors emanating if there is any.Just to eradicate spoilage of foods,I have this thing First in-First out.

My fridge almost empty because i not so like with a cold food or drink. Every time my fridge getting icy. I manually defrost them , to make sure the fridge get normal work, and can reduce the electricity consumption, may be around twice a month.

Well, I have to clean it out the day before I go to the grocery store so I know what I need to get and what I don't need. I don't leave food in my fridge longer then 2 days then it gets tossed to the dog or cats. They are always willing to eat it. I have to clean it atleast once a month thoroughly.

I can't afford to throw out food, and since I live mostly by myself I tend to cook a portion for two or three meals. I freeze one portion straight away and have the second one the next day maybe a little changed or with a different veggie or salad. Any leftover veggies are put in baggies and frozen to be used when I make soup or stock. so there is very little in the way of food in the fridg at any one time. I clean the shelves periodically when they need it. I use warm water and baking soda or a mild soap. I do a more thorough cleaning just before a holiday when I need more space to store extra food because company is coming, but I can honestly say I don't accumulate food that goes bad.

We seldom have any leftovers in our fridge. What is not eaten at the meal is generally frozen for a later time or else for me to take when I am away driving the truck. Taking meals from home saves us a lot of money as I don't have to buy all my meals for days on end.
That makes emptying and cleaning the fridge so much easier. We keep an opened packet of bicarbonate of soda in the fridge all the time and that gets rid of any smells. Once a fortnight my partner wipes it out with diluted vinegar and every ciouple of months one of us will remove the shelves and clean them with a vinegar spray. After they are dry, we then use a vanilla and water spray to make it smell a bit fresher.
We find using the vinegar kills any bugs that might happen to be lurking in there and it is better than anything else. It really never gets dirty enough to warrant using hot soapy water though and that is probably because it is cleaned regularly. There is not enough time for it to get too dirty or for any bugs to start multiplying.

Thanks for giving me best response for this discussion. I hope that you found some helpful and inexpensive hints from all the responses that you received. I think the trick is to clean the fridge out often as that way it isn't so overwhelming when the time comes.

Well, I do have a cleaning routine for the kitchen here, but it doesn't involve the refrigerator. We usually don't think about cleaning it out until things start smelling or something is spilled in it. I don't like cleaning it out, because the glass shelves are a pain to put back together. I should have done like you, and wiped her down when I took all the old food out of it on Wednesday, but ack, I'm lazy lol.

Could probably do it way more then we do. We make sure to get any vegetables or anyhting thta can rot out in time. As for jars of stuff that gets pushed to the back, we dont clean it out as often as we probably should.

Every time I go to the grocery store, I can't stand stuff just laying around in there, if its edible I'll pay one of the kids to eat it, if its not, kaboom! It goes in the trashcan that I'll ask one of the kids who didn't eat something to take out. Its a win win for everybody.

Hey hey
When growing up my parents were famous for not cleaning the fridge and when they would they would find so many mold covered things . They would keep everything and i mean everything . My fridge has lotta space and i hardly keep left overs and when i do i dont keep them longer than a day or 2 . about once a week i will clean it down and of course if it is needed . soap and water works best but clorox wipes are good too !

We actually clean our fridge out from time to time. It's more when the fridge is really really empty that we clean it. We take the whole thing apart sometimes and scrub everything down and out. half the time when I'm home I make sure to throw things out that have been in there too long and things we won't eat anymore.

I could definately do mine more often but for some reason I hate that job a lot! I did clear it out a few weeks ago and was absolutely disgusted with the amount of waste I had to throw out so I made myself promise to keep on top of that and so far I have. Now all I have to do is get myself to take a cloth once a week and just wipe the shelves out!

I try to clean our fridge at least three times a year. I try not to leave bad food in there but sometimes it gets pushed to the very back of the fridge that when I clean it out I say ew. I actually cleaned the refrigerator and the freezer last night. Yes, for room for thanksgiving. Hope you and your partner and your families are having a great one.
