Is heaven a real place when you die?

I am curious if heaven is a real place you go to when you die. My father passed last year in august, and do people just say that your loved ones are in a better place now called "heaven" because they don't want to worry you?

To a religious person who believes in that sort of thing it is a real place. Though they haven't ever seen heaven they believe in its existence through faith.
