Tuna Bake - tuna bake

I was once shown how to make a tuna bake sauce using milk, mixed herbs and tomato puree. My kids didn't like it much so I stopped making it. Recently I tried it again but using tinned salmon instead of tuna and using a packet sauce with cheese on top and they now love it. I want to go back to how I made the sauce before but can't remember how to do it and what else was in it apart from milk, puree and herbs. I looked it up in a recipe book but gave a recipe using mushroom soup which I know my kids won't like and it would give a completely different taste. How do you make your tuna bake?

Hi Humbug, The sauce is not difficu;t to make. Melt about two tbs of butter/margarine in saucepan over a low heat. Add flour and stir in quickly to make a thick paste. Then add milk very slowly and stir like crazy so it does not go lumpy. If it goes lumpy then don't worry - just put the cooles sauce into a blender. Once the flour 'has coooked' in the milk the sauce will become thicker. zThen add a few cuups of cheese, maybe some onion and black pepper and salt. Pour over salmon - do what ever you want. The toamto paste cna be added to salmon Sprinkle cheese again on top of dish and bake uncovered in oven for about 30 mins or less. The abopve is only a rough guide to amounts. You may want to try this with left over chicken. It is really good. could also add left over veggies to sauce. I hope that his helps. God Bless.

Sorry, I had a serious senior moment! Of course you must add the pasta! If you are making the dish in layers and adding the sauce at the end then put in a layer of spinach or something green. Veggies, that is and then you have a one pot meal. I like with salmon and chicken - left over chicken. You can stretch the meat this way. If I am not clear (which happens a lot these days) then please contact me. Enjoy!

Hi Humbug. I love pasta bake, its one of the best feel good meals. I've never tryed salmon in pasta bake....i'll try that next time. My children are fussy sometimes, for instant my youngest does not like tomato, so i make my pasta bake: loads of cheese on the bottom, mixed with tuna, pasta, onions, grated carrots, and more cheese on the top and put in the oven to bake. Goes down well with the kids yum yum. (i must try that salmon one)

Hi amanda333 what I do at the moment is cook the pasta, steam some brocolli, make up the sauce according to the directions. Then when the sauce has thickened and pasta is cooked I add it all together, sprinkle the cheese on top and slam it in the oven. The salmon is really nice because it has a softer flavour as I find tuna is quite strong and has a harsh flavour for kids. The brocolli is nice with it too. Thanks amanda

My favorite way to make this is to use albacore tuna (drained). I cook the egg noodles, drain and place them in a casserole dish. Then I add a can of cream of mushroom soup and the tuna (flaked with a fork). Add some cheddar cheese to the mix and top with crushed potato chips. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 F oven.

Hi there ElusiveButterfly I like to crush chips/crisps on top of mine too but one of my kids hates it, I don't know why. I don't want to try the mushroom soup because I know that my kids won't eat it but they will eat it if it has a tomatoey sauce on it. Thanks for your response

Hello Anne18 I use a packet one now and it is really nice but I just want to get out of using packet stuff all the time and if I have the ingredients in the cupboard then I can just throw it together anytime we feel like it. Mind you the price of tinned salmon has gone up a lot lately. I buy the skinless and boneless one, I know it is more expensive but I can't stand picking it all out. Cheers Anne18

I love tuna bake in fact I make it often for me and th ekids hubby isnt keen on it but that is because of the white sauce which he deosnt like, it is a very similar recipe to fish pie but with pasta instead of mash. I basically get tuna, sweetcorn and cold pasta and mix together in a white sauce or cheese sauce and then pop it in the oven easy peasy.
