doing our duty well make us more close to the god this is what hinduism teaches, for this there is a myth story,i can tell u there is a god named narad {this is a sage who lived many years ago in earth,he was always saying the name of god and dont miss a second without pray and had written narad smrithy in which he had composed the tones do ra mi fa so la ti do}.ok narad went to god and asked "may i know who is the most favourite believer of u" god smiled and said him that he loved a farmer the most narad went to see him,he woke up at 5 and hav bath and come to front of house and just do a prayer to god and then work till evening come home take bath and prayed, narad was surprised, there was sages who where always taking god name then y this farmer, he asked god and god smiled and take narad to a farm house then put a pot full of water to his head and said go around the farm house and dont drop a singlee drop of water outside, narad carefully walk around the farmhouse and came back telling that he saved water from falling ground, god asked him how many times he prayed, and narad said he was concentrating on pot so dont take name remember that the farmer prayed 2 times in his hard daily routine so he is the believer of me and i am always with my believer. i think some had got the meaning of it,sorry i know my english is bad

Well im a catholic and praying is one of our practices but even if you pray all the time or go to church always its no use if you dont practice what the church or religion teaches you. For me your actions are still important as they say "practice what you preach" but in this case "practice what your church preach". Hope this answers a part, if not all, of your questions.
