My Dream House and Solar Energy

Way back during my high-school years, I always wanted my future home to be not dependent on any other Electric/Utilities Company for my electricity. I guess it wasn't the soaring electricity usage rates that annoys me, but it's the hassle of paying your bills every month. So when I have my own house, I want to use Solar Energy as one of the alternative for my electrical source [the other one is using methane from human feces through a special sewage but I'll talk about that in another post.] Is using Solar Panels on one small roof enough to provide electricity in a house with a combined living-dining-kitchen rooms, at most two bedrooms and a bathroom, with usual appliances as TV, computer, refrigerator, radio? Or are solar panels on a roof just enough to give electricity to the lightbulbs or just one specific appliance? So far, and in reality, I only got to see solar panels used in small calculators. I even saw solar panels occupying quite a large area just to light up a single lighthouse. Also, I watched a news on television that one city in our country [I dont know which city was that] has implemented using solar energy in each of their lightposts. In this way, they save on operating cost since the lightposts will just light up themselves at twilight. What do you think of my dreamhouse using solar energy? Is it possible?

That is so sad. I wish they could make solar panels that are very strong in the near future. Yey!
