Anyone know which country this dish comes from?
I cooked it for tea to night, went down ok and children said I can cook it again.
I have some questions about it, but in a nutshell without writing all the recipe out its mashed potatoes mixed with flour and egg (pm if you want full recipe). You make it into small balls and cook in a pot of hot water until they rise to the top of pan.
Instead of bioling them could I bake them?
What sauces do you pour over? It said on recipe serve with your favourite sauce. I made a lovely veggie sauce a bit like a very thick veggie soup without so much liquid. Hubby wants more meat!!!!
Any information on gnocchi would be greatly recieved. I had never heard of them until I was surfing a recipe site on pm. And would love ot know as much as possible.
Many thanks

Hi there Anne18
They are an Italian dumpling that I do know but I know very little about them. You can buy them already made in the shops but they are small, slightly smaller than a walnut but not as small as a hazelnut. I don't know why I am comparing them to the size of nuts but there you go. My boss used to eat gnocchi when I worked out in the US but I can't remember what he ate them with.

Gnocchi is from Italy. It is used there as an alternative to the multitude of noodle variations for the main course.

Hi Anne
Gnocchi is Italian as far as i know. It is a form of pasta.
You can eat it with any sauce you like. I like it with a tomato based pasta sauce or a cheesy white sauce, but anything will do.
I don't think you can bake it actually - well, guess you could, but that isn't how it is supposed to be cooked. The Gnocchi that you buy in the store cooks in just 2 or 3 minutes.
I like it, but my hubby won't go anywhere near it and neither will my kids.

What a coincidence!
I'd bought some and cooked it yesterday. I was hungry when I got back that I forgot to boil it and simply added the pesto sauce in. Well, that taught me another and faster way to cook it, by simply putting the mixture into the microwave (too late to boil gnocchi when it's been slathered with the sauce). Cooked it at the Potato setting. It turned out just fine. And if you have a food cover shield, just dampen it with water, and your gnocchi will come out moist.
It's Italian, and as someone had said, originally made of potato flour.

Hi Anne, Well I thought this dish came from Italy but I could be wrong and when I make it I boil up in a pan that I have added a stock cube too for extra flavour and then I put into a dish with a blob of butter and grate cheese over the top. I may have a chicken side sald with lots of cherry tomatoes too with it. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Anne. It's a italian dish and very tasty too. I make it many times, at least once a month. It is a tasty dish and a cheap one. I use to season the dough of gnocchi because it becomes more tasty. I use a tomatoes sauce and chicken sauce with tomatoes, pimento, chili, onion, garlic and pieces of chicken when I eat gnocchi with chicken. I eat with milanesa steak too. Sometimes I make stuffed gnocchi too it is wonderful. You can put gnocchi in the meat soup as well. You can put it in the minestrone soup also. But you must cook them in the hot water, you can't bake them I tried once and it comes unsavoury.
Cheers and have a nice day.

I had it for dinner tonight. I make mine without egg. You must boil them. They are ready as soon as they float. It's a great way to use leftover potato's. It's really a peasant food, using white flour instead of the more expensive semolina flour. I still like it. I use a very thin marinara sauce on them. They are very quick and easy to make. Perfect for my busy schedule.

Being Italian, Rachael Ray cooks them ALL the time so you might check out her website for some really GREAT recipes. Here's the link to the gnocchi recipes...

It sounds really tasty, and like a great alternative to potato pancakes (although those are sounding pretty tasty right now, too). Since they are potato, I wonder if a sour cream based sauce would taste good? Of course, now I am thinking baked potatoes, LOL.

Yeah they are an Italian dumpling that you can eat just like pasta with any sauce. When I first heard about them I was very excited to try them because I am a big fan of mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, fired potatoes, ANY POTATOES. and I love pasta dishes so I thought it would taste good. However, I did not really prefer the Gnocchi. It was mushy and it did not taste the way i anticipated it to taste. Maybe it was just a bad batch and I should try it again.
Anyways, Im glad you liked it! Maybe yours turned out better than the stuff I tried (It was all stuck together and gooey)
