Are you sometimes feel obliged to give TIPS to waiters?

I went to this very classy restaurant and somehow, after we got our bill, we saw that there is a service charge already. But somehow, I felt I still need to give tips. Or can I just get away without the tip and still come back to eat again and get the same service I had before?

I never want to guve tips, because i think it's wrong. Waiter have a salary and being nice is just their work. I prefer give money to homeless people.. I think that it is very impolite to ask for tips. here in italy, we aren't used to it. Instead, when I went to Los Angeles, New York and other places, giving tips was obligatory and it was written in papers.. Even on taxis!!

I see. I guess it depends in one's culture. Here, it's okay to give tips. What is not good is that waiters EXPECT to give tips at the end of the meal. It should not be required. I do give tips if I am satisfied with the service but if I see a VAT or Value Added Tax or Service Charge included in the receipt, I think it's okay not to give tips anymore.

I always give tips if the service is good. Like others have said most waiters/waitresses live on thier tips. What I don't approve of is when they add the tip fee onto your meal ticket and your service was bad. That is not right.

I am assuming you are only refering to giving an additional tip above and beyond if the tip has already been added in to the bill. Because I always tip and would never not tip because waiters and waitresses rely on those tips to live, and I would not want to hurt them by not tipping them. In the case where they add the tip in already because there are many people at the table I will a lot of the time just leave it at that. However if the service is amazing and the waiter or waitress had gone above and beyond and has consistently filled drink glasses without being told, anticipates needs for extra napkins, or is extremely friendly, and perhaps even entertaining, and just is generally better than average, I would probably give him or her a little extra.

I usually feel obliged to pay the waiter when I go out. It just seems like the right thing to do. I understand that the gratuity may be already included. Sometimes I don't leave a tip if the tip happens to be included though. I think that you could possible get away with going back and having the same service.

It depends on how much the service charge is. We try to leave 10% total of our meal - so if the service charge didn't reach that mount then we add more, if it did then we don't and we just leave. I'm sure the exact reason they have such good service (if they do have good service) is because people are "forced" to provide tips.

I know the rule is that they automaticaly include the tip depending on how many people there are. it's either that or it's how much money the bill comes out all together, I can't remember which one. If the service is not as I expect I will leave no tip. Waiters make their living off of tips. As far as I know their regular salary isn't that much because they are expected to get tips from the customers. I had 2 incidents where me and my friends didn't leave a tip. We were in canada for new years back in 2006, and it took a full 1hr and a half maybe even 2hrs for our food to come. The waiter was trying to give us free food and drinks at the end. This guy came to the table with a plate of french fries as we were putting on our jackets. I started laughing so hard right in the guys face. I laughed all the way out the door. French fries?..lol. The other was last year in California. We went to roscoe's chicken and waffle. The waitress sat us down and came back to take our order 40min later. Of course you know she recived no tip from our table. I was at the point were I was ready to walk out. But other than things like that I don't have a problem giving up $2-$3 dollars or even more depending on how many people are eating at my table for a tip.

Hi there, thanks for your response. I agree with you, it depends on service they provide, the accuracy and their promptness or how many are eating at the table. Sometimes, its because of the ambience, I don't know; maybe it was just my first time and the ambience is good, jazz music playing, the crowd, the mood is setup and its seems perfect for me. And since I am a fully satisfied customer, I added a few bucks tip. Sometimes, at few occasions, when the service did not pass my expectations, I still leave a few coins fearing that when I come back, I may not be served equally as others. Sometimes, the reason I come back is beacuse of the food, that I am willing to wait to just to satisfy my cravings.
