Well now it looks like we may all have food poisoning

Darn it. Here it is the day after Thanksgiving and we are all slightly sick. I can't figure out what could have caused all these trips to the bathroom! I had everything refrigerated and heated it up properly and it went to the table right away. I didn't eat any leftovers later on although some family members did. The only item I can think of is a deep fried turkey a friend brought over. We're going to call him to see how he is doing tomorrow when he returns home. Just annoying because I am so darn careful. Have you ever had food poisoning from a dinner at your own home?

Oh,how horrible....food poisoning...yuk..been there. Actually in a way when I had food poisoning it had nothing to do with something I personally cooked up from scratch, but I had bought some frozen fish fillets (Gortons). I took one bite of it and thought to myself...mm...this tastes funny. Took another bite just to confirm my first reaction and still tasted funny so didn't eat anymore. Well, my goodness even though I had only eaten a few bites don't ask how sick I became only a few hours later and all the next day..to this day I'm STILL leary about eating frozen store bought fish

Hey pye, Just recently there was a recall on Gortons frozen fish products. Sounds like you happened to be one of the innocent victims. I love breaded fried fish on a sandwich, but they just don't make them like they used to. Here in Fl. you can get some pretty good fresh frozen fish filet's. I get one of my favorites and dip them in egg and then in panko bread crumbs and fry them in my iron skillet. It only takes a few minutes to prepare and cook. So much better then the frozen ones. leenie

We used to hae a VanDeKamp plant right in town and I thought that was always pretty good stuff. A couple bites will do the trick huh? Now I'm wondering about what I even just tasted. After much detective work, we can't figure it out yet unless some of the family has stronger constitutions. Yep and one bad experience kind of ruins it for you.

Hi Whittby, Since you just answered one of my posts, I decided to check out one of yours. I can't believe food poisoning after Thanksgiving! What a bummer!! Any chance it was the turkey? You said a friend brought over a deep fried bird. Maybe he somehow mishandled it, like leaving out of refrigeration too long. I know how you feel. I have definately had food poisoning but I don't think from home yet. If I'm the slightest bit concerned, it goes in the garbage as I'm sure you do the same. Someone else's cooking is out of our hands. We went to my brother's house and he deep fried a Turkey as well. I'm sure glad we are ok. I hope this turns out to be a little virus instead. Feel better. leenie

I saw your remark under my post about the Gorton's fish recall..yikes didn't realize that, but no my food poisoning incident actually happened about six years ago..but who knows? Back then the FDA wasn't recalling that much food or was a little known incident..nowadays it seems some food is recalled every week.

I'm thinking a little virus right now since our detective work turned up nothing. Maybe there are just a few cast iron stomaches in the family. I looked up deep friend turkey by the way and how knows. I can't call him up and ask if he properly cooked it, just may get out of him bringing it again next year?

Sorry to hear all of you are sick. We haven't felt well after eating at some fast food places. One place was shut down after several people became ill and it went under. I was glad the inspectors shut it down, so more people wouldn't get sick.

I have brought home food from a fast food place and left it alone after a bite. Who knows why it tasted odd to me. We have a health inspection report posted in our newspaper her of all the health violations for restaurants in the city. amazing how many violations there can be.

Not anything that we have made. Though we did get poisoning we belived from some food from a Hardee's near hubby's work some yrs ago. That was simply awful & thank goodness we had 2 bathrooms at the time cause that was 10x worse than having the flu. I even went as far as reporting the restaurant to the health department. As while hubby was getting our food I went to the bathroom and the bathroom was in disrepair and a person couldn't even do their business nontheless washup afterwards, no soap, no water in the sink, no toweling or blower...toilets didn't flush or work it was awful.

I hear you about having two bathrooms. We couldn't do without two even on a normal day. It's hard to imagine that Hardee's passed inspections.

Luckily, I and my family have no food poisoning up to now. Maybe sometimes I feel pain of abdomen, diarrhea, and get gastroenteritis for eating something cold or unsanitary or eating too much, but the case of food poisoning never happened to me and people arround me. As you said, if you want to keep health and avoid food poisoning, you should choose the fresh food. Even if you heated the leftovers, bacterias die, your food become sanitary but not healthy. Well,in fact, alough I know that above,I and my family still eat some leftovers everyday. We are poor and couldn't to waste food that does not go to bad. What food poisoning I said refers to the people who eat the same food get ill together, maybe that is some different from yours. So, if you said we may all eat something unhealthy that may lead to ill, I could say yes, and I am the one. But please think of one question: our food can't become absolutely healthy and sanitary, why someone will get ill after eat something while others not. In my opinion, whether you will get ill after eating is due to both food and immunity. There is a common saying in our country: you won't get ill easily if you eat some food unsanitary or unhealthy. But in any case,we should advocate to eat the healthy food!

I'm trying to follow you here. And I do think the immune system has a lot to do with it. We try to eat healthy, but we give in and eat whatever a lot.

There have been times when this has happened, but like you we are Very careful, and usually I will not eat any food that could be in question as well. I know we ended up one time cooking some Hamburger for Spagetti that ended up not being the Best and we both got sick from it, so now we are doubly careful and will smell older Frozen hamburger before cooking it up as well.

Am so sorry to hear you were all sick from Thanksgiving dinner. Our daughter had a deep fried turkey this year but totally forgot to ask her how it tasted. Her hubby was outside cooking it when we left. I can't recall getting sick from any meal made at our house. I am so careful, as you are, about letting things sit out or by tossing leftovers if they are only a couple of days old. Don't want to take the chance. Did your friend have any problems?

I am glad that you're feeling better now, whittby. We had a near miss many years ago, when I cooked my first turkey. It was after our mom had passed away, and I made this for my brother, sister, and myself. When I went to take it out of the oven it was 'literally' green. I'd left it out to thaw way too long. What a waste, as it went straight into the garbage. I had very little cooking experience as a teen. There are two times that I recall, when I actually suffered from food poisoning. The first was after a friend and myself ate chicken in a restaurant. Both of us became ill within hours. The second time was the worst. I was deathly ill, as were many other employees, after partaking of a luncheon buffet at our work. I was sick for days (running at both ends), and hardly anyone showed up for work the next day. Horrible!

I'm still thinking it might be viral at this point because we just can't come up with a common food for all of us. And some of the family isn't the leat bit sick. Interesting, I haven't been sick from a restaurant that I know of anyway. I think some of this flu we get is food related though.

Not at my own home... but at an 18th birthday party my friends and i attended... it was a typical party at a barrio... where there were lots of people and the food was great... and after that... my friends and i had a sleepover at another's house... but during the middle of the night then in the morning... we all had stomach aches... and had to go to the bathroom frequently... and all because of the food at the party... Well, it might not even be the food... might have been the water since they did not serve any soda... that was one of the most painful experience i have ever had... and talk about doing it in the bathroom of a different house... just embarrassing...

Are you just running to the bathroom or do you actually feel sick? With food poisoning, you feel really sick. Going to the bathroom often can be because the food is sooo different from what you normally eat that your gastro-intestinal system is going into overdrive. Way more fat than we normally eat makes my husband and I go to the bathroom a lot. More sugar makes us feel funny, too and just eating way more than usual can too. But when I've had food poisoning, sick to my stomach and like the flu. Really, really nasty. Either way, you run the risk of dehydration, so make sure everyone is drinking water and a drink with electrolytes in it between the drinks of water. Hope everyone is better soon. Take care

I had some undercooked, wrong temperatured seafood one time and was I ever sick! But way different from when I eat too much fat. If the turkey was fried and you're not used to that level of grease, that could be it. Take care.

although, this past summer, I ate a meal that everything had fat and lots of gas causing vegetables and the gas almost killed me (I had a discussion about it on here).

I haven't had food poisoning from a meal in my own home, no. But from ordering pizza in. I know it can be awful, either way. Sometimes I guess it just happens. I sure hope everyone is feeling better by now.

We're feeling better - at least I am. Of course I didn't eat chocolate or pizza or potato chips when I started feeling a little better last night - no sympathy from me now. I'm ignoring them all tucked away in here by the computer. Mean mean Mom.
