How Do You Know If Your Respondent Is Actually Reading Your Discussion?

I start discussions at least once a day and respond to at least 5-15 discussions depending upon my mood.
When responding to discussions, I make sure that I read everything as much as possible. If it's too lengthy I try to get key points at least or I just don't respond at all.
I know when a person is not reading a discussion when they just respond to the title of my discussion especially if it's a question. I think it probably happened to most of us. Please do share your experiences.
Happy myLotting everybody!

Yes a lot of people just read the title and there is nothing you can do about it. In fact I take a lot thought about my titles now knowing that some people will not go any further.
I do not know why they do not read the discussion. If they do not care why are they bothering to answer it?

Honestly, I think it is fairly obvious if a person has really read your discussion or comments and if they have not. You can tell by how short or how long their answer or comment is. I have seen both when I have started up a discussion and I have seen both when responding to discussions. I think a lot of the time that those who have very short comments are just trying to get more posts in. At least that is how I see it. I always try to provide some sort of productive input when I comment on a discussion.
Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

Another member on this site (Myklj999) did a series of discussions that had nothing to do with the title, and you should have seen all the people that responded to the title alone. I suggest that you do that. Since your friends should have you on their e-mail list, all you have to do is start a discussion, and put an attention grabbing headline on it that has nothing to do with what you are talking about. You will instantly see all the people in your friends list that actually read what you are saying, or just want to respond so they can get the post count and the penny. You can edit your list based on that alone.

Sorry I just don't believe that one. I mean, if you are in a hurry, come back to a discussion when you have the time to at least skim through it. Most of the people that I have noticed that just answer from the title are people that I like to call "post counters". You go through their responses, and the majority of them are just one word or one sentence. They have a high post count in a short period of time being here. Just people that are only here for the money. I try to make sure when I discover one of these people on my list I delete them. I used to try and tell them a few tips in the past, but I found that most of them just don't care enough to try them, so I have learned to keep my fingers to myself lol.

Hi, yuna!
It's hard for me to come up with an interesting discussion once a day. I end up responding to other discussions first before I make my own. It also depends on my mood. Sometimes I don't respond immediately after reading the comments from my started discussions.
I think it's silly not to read the whole discussion. We can't assume what's really behind the question in the first place. I hate it when people do that. Sometimes I had to respond by asking again about what I really wanted from them. Anyway, that's good in some way, since the conversation tends to go far.
Still, I hope people read first the entirety of the started discussion before jumping into conclusion. I just had that experience the last few days.. I was like, "what the.." after reading their responses.. haha! ^^

Yup, I've noticed that too, Yuna... I scan first the pages before I make my own response. ^^ congratulations! Well, I think your title is attention grabber. From the title alone, we can already conclude what you wanna relay, and many can relate to that.

Oh yeah it happens to a lot of my discussions and this is the only discussion that has very good quality responses. Go check it out my dear you won't find a one-liner response.
I also started another discussion together with this one and if you have seen it there are at least two or three that I noticed who just read the first two paragraphs of my discussion hahaha.

I don't think that is accurate, because sometimes I only respond to one point because it's the only part that interests me. If someone rambles on, I don't finish.

i guess the only way you can really tell is if their reply makes sense.
i've had some answers that left me scratching my head.
didn't even come close to that topic or any other for that matter.

hehe.. I know i'm guilty of that, sometimes.. lol =D It happens when some of my frenz are starting like 8-9 discussions everyday, and i get so sick adn tired of responding to them, that i will not bother to read the post, but only the title.. hehe ^_^
But other than that, i will make it a point to read and understand the post before responding ^_^

Lol I have a lot of friends who starts discussions at least 6-10 times a day but I don't respond to all of it especially if I don't like the title itself. If I'm in the mood I try to read the 1st few sentences If I don't like it then I won't respond.
Thanks for the response!

Sometimes I have to go back and read my own discussions, the responses I get just don't make sense to me. I try to see my discussion from all points of view.
So I guess the answer to your question is I don't know what or how much they are reading.

Hi there yuna15
I always read to see what the whole of the discussion is about because sometimes the titles don't have anything to do with the discussion at all! A lot of the time I don't read all the responses because I tend to respond to discussions from my friends that have been sent direct to my inbox and you don't have the option to view the whole discussion.

Hi yuna15,
Interesting question!...but I'm not really sure what you're asking.
The way I respond is, if it's a question like this, asking for MY opinion, it doesn't matter if everyone else has the same opinion, this one is MINE. The way I respond to a "how do I" type question is that if someone else has already given a satisfactory answer, there's not need for me to put in my two cents.
Happy MyLotting!

i agree :p Ive had people only comment on my titles. Its kind of obvious when they do. Or theres times when i can tell people just read the first sentence. Because the only comment on the first sentence and state their opinion, but they just look stupid cuz it doesnt fit with the rest of my discussion sometimes lol.

Yup that's why sometimes what I do is I try to ask a yes or no question or sometimes I make the title different from I'm talking about in my discussion hehehe. That way I know if their reading it or not. Well I just ignore them usually. As much as possible I try to be polite and I even reiterate what I said in the discussion.

Oh! I do the same. I really do not answer or respond to discussions without reading the whole. Though, at first, you get struck with the title first. But I advise other people to mylot that you should not respond right away to discussions without reading the whole or body of the discussion.
It is easy to find out when my respondents actually read my discussions. They are following the right path which I want to imply on my discussion. Though, there respondents who are loosing track. hehehe...I do not mind it. You cannot control them or you cannot just say, "hey, you are wrong"...Just let them be.

I can't see any point in responding to a discussion if I don't read it. I think really this is a necessity or I would get very embarrassed if I had not responded in the context of the discussion. But I guess some just put any one-liner. I am not sure if myLot pays for those one-liner responses though..Derek

You can almost always tell when someone responds having only read the title. That I would never do as quite often the story is entirely different. I do read the entire post. Often times, a person leaves out a key bit of info that is later provided in the responses. There...I'm guilty. I don't usually read thru the entire discussion prior to responding. If I'm really puzzelled, I may read thru some but for the most part, I answer to the discussion. My time on here is limited and generally late at night after I get out of work. Sometimes, I misunderstand a person's point even tho I've read the article and that usually gets cleared up pretty easily with discussions on it. I have had a few instances where someone has completely misunderstood me which tells me they read part of my article and reacted. it happens.

Oh it's pretty normal for us to sometimes misunderstand discussions. Probably the words are not constructed properly or the ideas might be mixed up. What I if I don't understand the discussion and I find it interesting, I try to ask questions first. Then If I got my answer, then I will comment or respond to the discussion.
Thanks for the response!

There are times that even if they read they probably have misunderstood. Like in one of today's post that I read, I misunderstood the thought and my comments did not match what the poster really wanted to be answered. It's a good thing that my friend was patient with me and explained to me what he meant and so I apologize and made another comment to correct my mistake.
But I would say that there are those who really just respond based on the title and do not read the contents anymore. This is because they are rushing to make as many posts as they can. This is not good because the quality of their posts suffered. I've received in many instances answers which are out of context because the respondents did not really read the whole post. I do understand that most of the Users here have to make the most out of their time so I now have been trying to assure that when I post a new topic, I am not making it too long but of course not very short. I myself have observed that I have been skipping very long posts because I also am running against time.

When I cram I tend to not being able to read the whole post even if I thought that I did. Regarding the discussion you responded to, I think it's a whole different scenario it's easy to tell if they misunderstood it or if they haven't read it.
That happened to me once. Then the person just corrected me. I'm sure they won't be upset by just mere understandings.
Thanks for the response!

well i usually read only the starting and then just run through the discussions.. only thing that stops me from jumping to responding are comments posted by other users. Then i read that post because i believe only something interesting will initiate a comment here.. well i think it is the same with most of the mylotters here.. give it a try.. start giving comments in your friends discussions and see how it spans out.

It is true for many of us and I myself has dome in few case. I have jump started on the title, posted my response and then found actual topic is different from the heading and the members is looking for some other information. Those are few cases only and happened at the beginning.
Now I read the discussion fully and try to understand what the mylotter is trying to get out of his discussion.
Probably the first indication that the response has been posted without reading is that the postings will be mostly irrelevant to the discussion.
