Are You In The Spirit!?

Canada
November 29, 2008 3:52pm CST
Are you in the Christmas Spirit this year? If not, what do you think it would take to get you in the spirit? If so, what was it that got you in the spirit or did it just come naturally with you this year? For me, it is generally a natural thing with the time of year but not this year! I am struggling to get in the spirit! Seeing the stores is actually like an out of body experience this year (If you know what I mean) Nothing is seeming real and decorations haven't helped either! This is so strange for me! I think that is part of the reason why I am so far behind in my preparations for it! Any suggestions for me? ~Heavens~

I absolutely love music, so anytime I hear Christmas music, I start singing or dancing along, even though I can't sing.. Unfortunately my computer has no sound, because I try to get into Hanukkah, since it usually is before Christmas and some Hanukkah songs are really good, especially the video I posted up here not too long ago, that no one replied to.."hint,hint" This video was one I had on my myspace last year and I found it again, I can almost remember the words by watching the video, but it isn't the same as hearing it..

Aww, that is sweet of you heavens, you don't have to watch it, but I will PM you the link, just in case you decide to..It isn't something everyone will like, just like any music/video that is made, but I enjoy this and so does my son..

As any member can tell by my avatar, I have been in the spirit for a month or so now. My lights outside have been on for a couple weeks at night. I wrapped some gifts today finally. I wear the same hat in my avatar all over, everywhere I go. I hum or sing carols as I shop etc. I've been wishing everyone that crosses my path in public a Happy Holiday. My wife and daughter get somewaht embarressed as I am a very open person, especially during the Holiday Season. Going to volunteer at a church or someplace for the Holiday one day may be a key to your unspiritedness. See how others that are truely very unfortunate have the spirit will help I think. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It is the season of giving. This can mean, and does mean, giving of ones self. Volunteer anywhere at all. A food shelf, a food line, a place that gives toys to the needy. Any place like that. One does not need to give things litterally as in presents in my eyes. Hard to explain I guess. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Well Grandpa this is the first year that I cannot buy any gifts for anyone at all! We have asked everyone who gives to us to give money this year so that we can keep our son in therapy! There is no money here and I find it really hard not to buy for people and be frugal around this time of year! ~Heavens~

Hello All , This is the first year too that I prob wont be able to buy gifts . What is most important is getting that warm and needing feeling . I love to be near all my loved ones . Gifts can come from the heart too like baking or writing ! get creative

I am and I'm not. Normally, I would had all my decorating done way before Thanksgiving. This year, I had to go get a new tree, which totally bumed me out since I hate wasting money. I'm glad I got gifts for my youngest already, thanks to my phone company for getting a modem back in June. Even with most of my decorating done, some gifts taken care of. I just don't care for the holiday, I just wish this month to go away. Hard to get into the spirit when it revolves around spending and not the true meaning anymore.

That's so true chertsy! To me Christmas is family and I am thankful I will have that I only wish I could do more for them as I have other years but then the point you've made here of the commercialization of Christmas is totally true and so perhaps I should be thankful that we are forced to getting back to the root and true meaning of Christmas! Have A Wonderful Christmas!! ~Heavens~

hey and hi, how are you. of course i am in the spirit i already bought all the decorations, lights, gifts, chocolates, games, snacks and can't wait for it to come. My kid brother expects a new PSP from me so i bought it for him and a few games to go with it(hehe the games are a collection of 30 including my fav's and his) i hope he like's it. Best thing to get in the spirit is to just sit with your family and have a little family time (always works for me). Oh and Have A Merry Christmas (^_^) and a Happy New Year to all.

Wish I could help you but seems I got the same blues as you, I went in a bit earlier to wrap some of the presents I got in the back bedroom, thought that would make me feel better, after the second one I got bored with it. I will have to move everything in the living room to put up the tree and wondering if it is worth it. I felt the same at Halloween, I have lights to string and I didn't even decorate for it. There seems to be a sadness this year for the holidays, I don't know if it is because so many are out of work and going to be hard on some. I know it is a struggle here to get all that I need. Thanksgiving sucked too, we had so much food and everyone had to eat and go somewhere else. Maybe it will get better as it gets closer to Christmas, I hope so.

Well, I am a bit bettter since my husband brought home our tree and put it up for me...It atleast has the lights and star on it so far...I'll finish decorating it throughout the next week in little spare moments...If I have any! LOL I generally have quite a bit of my baking done and stored by now but this year have not started and I have a Christmas function to attend in two weeks so I have to get moving on that and have a lot of hours at work this week to dwindle the amount of time I have to do this stuff not to mentionj my crafts because I can't afford to buy any gifts!! The Economy has really gotten to us this year and I think that is a lot of it for me! I wish you all the best bdugas and hope that you have a very Merry Christmas and that things get better for you! Sorry your Thanksgiving was such a disappointment! Take Care! ~Heavens~

outside lights - just got these up today, all i'm doing outside this year.
i was in the christmas mood at the end of october, a little early for me lol. maybe it's the green cast that was put on my arm the first week of november........nawww. or maybe it was me and my daughter watching chevy chase's christmas vacation when i went to see her (end of october). usually i don't get into the spirit of things til thanksgiving is over, but this year it came over me early. could be the trip i have planned for christmas too, and i wanted to enjoy my decorations as much as possible before i left, around the 10th. our tree has been up and decorated since nov 18th, my daughter called and was decorating her's the day before me, lol. put on some christmas tunes or movies, maybe that will help.

So where are you going to be for Christmas? I am so glad that you have been enjoying your decorations! Normally I have already stored some of my baking away and I generally have my decorations for at least a full month to five weeks in total... This year, I have not started my baking yet though I have been to the bulk store to buy my supplies which is a start I guess...I have a Christmas gathering to attend in two weeks so I have to get myself in gear now and get things done around here! I also am doing crafts this year and creative types of gifts as we have no money to spare so that is going to take time and I have only done a little towards that... I also work four days a week so my time is limited even more! Well, at least my tree is up now with the lights...I am hoping that will help as I simply must get into this or I won't be ready! Thanks for your suggestions! ~Heavens~

although my s/o and i will be apart this christmas, it will be well worth the sacrafice. i am planning a surprise trip to see my parents, sister, and youngest daughter, who also has a daughter now that i haven't seen. it's been two years since i was able to make this trip, due to work/budget. my oldest daughter is the only one that knows i'm going. it will also be the first christmas since 2004 for all of us to be together.

Hi! I cannot really give you a good advice as to how to be in the Christmas spirit, because I myself am not in the 'Christmas spirit' mode yet, either. Well, I guess this is because my family is back home and I am here in the States. I miss my parents and my younger siblings. I am here with my other sister, but it's just not the same. So even when I'm in the mall, with all the decors and the songs, I'm not feeling 'it' at all. I think I will feel it a few days before Christmas after I have given out my gifts, and on the day itself when I get to talk to my family about their Christmas back home. Happy myLotting!

I understand how you're feeling this Christmas, heavens. I also know the reasons behind this. You have a very generous, caring, giving spirit, and so it's hard for you to not do what you're usually able to. I've 'seen' this caring firsthand, and have 'known' your generosity in really tangible ways. This is the worst the economy has been in many years, and it is scary. Many are at their wits end, trying to figure out how to survive. This is doubly hard, now that the holiday season is here. I'd 'love' to be able to finally 'give back,' and yet another year is almost over, and things are no different (for me) than in previous years. Please don't continue to feel bad/guilty, for not being able to do all you'd like this year. Your family and friends do understand, and concentrating on family times, is the best way to feel better. I haven't been to any stores yet, and will be late in doing so, again this year. I find too, that the older I get, the more difficult this is anyway, despite whether I have much to spend or not. One or two trips will have to do me. I find myself awash with emotion this year too, and much more than usual. I think it's because of all of the huge changes that are coming next year. 'We' must get beyond this, and find ways to make Christmas the special time it deserves to be (and is.) Love and Hugs

I really haven't had any opportunity to go out (anywhere) this past week. I 'know' deadlines are looming, so will have to see what I can do. I'm hoping to be able to go with a good friend ASAP. I didn't go out 'anywhere' on Sunday, as I wasn't feeling well again. I am limited by this, and will have to make sure that I try to stay in good a shape as possible, so there won't be a repeat of the way our dinner was last year. By this I mean the pain I was in.

Well, you know that you need not worry about buying for us nor your daughter either...A store is not needed for us! I'm in trouble myself as I have not started my baking and only minimal with my crafts! I need to get things made and then put together and you know how little time I really have! I do hope that you do not have a repeat of last year with your legs etc. that would not be good! Take Care! Love and Hugs ~Heavens~

It is scary the way the economy is these days Mom and I see peoples worries where I work and the customers moods etc when they are in the store! Customer Service is a nightmare these days!!! I don't really feel guilty over not being able to buy but I am staying away from the stores as much as possible so that things don't jump off the shelf at me! Please read my response to you under Grandpa Bob! I am shocked to hear that you have not been to any stores yet as I know you have a gathering in two weeks time but then you know what they need and that doesn't require going to any stores so I hope that you and your daughter are going by those wishes! I hope that you can get out to the stores soon! I understand why you are feeling the way you are feeling with all of the changes afoot for your family in 2009...That is part of my concern as to what is best to give my sister-in-law but I think I have figured it out...I just hope it goes over well with her and that it doesn't make us all cry!! I agree, we do need to find a way to make Christmas Special this year, more so than any other year has been!! Love and Hugs to you as well! ~Heavens~

No I am not. I dont know if its the pregnancy or what is it but this year it does not feel like christmas. I really dont even want to put the tree up as it is so much work and mind you my christmas is in january so the last thing I want is to pick up decorations off the floor for the next 6 weeks or so (we take the tree down after the 19 th of january). I wish I could help you and any other year I might have had something better to say but this year well let me just say I still dont have any presents for anyone and no idea what to get so there you go.

No dear christmas in Australia is same as everywhere but my christmas is not I am christian Orthodox and we celebrate by the original calendar befare it was chnched (hence the name Orthodox) in fact most orthodox now have a bit of both they celebrate some by the new calendar and some by the old but we are ising just the old calendar. I am going to put the tree up but I will do that around st. Nick which is on the 18th December and I am going to get help to do it as there is no way I can do it on my own. And I will get presents bun I am in ni hurry this year. Because I feel sick so much I can hardly go shoping any more so I am going to use catalogs to choose what to get and be quick when I go to get them.

I was in the mood for it, in fact I was really looking forward to it to be honest with you. But then as is always the case something happens to spoil it and in my case that something happened this past week, I dont want to go into detail but well things are a bit unsettled now and I have lost my spirit. Hopefully it will come back very soon and I know what you mean by out of body experience too.

Snow helps for me too and all the snow we did have has now all gone away with all of the rain that has made all the yucky mud outside now! I know that is not helping!! What has helped is that My Husband put the tree up for me while I was at work and put the lights and star on...Today I put on a few decorations and did some Crafts with my son...I still have some more decorating of the tree to do but it dfoes help to have it there to look at! Thanks so much and have a very Merry Christmas! ~Heavens~

I usually get in the Christmas spirit when I go shopping for gifts for my loved ones, and when I shop for decorations and such and hang them up in my home. I also get into the Christmas spirit when I sit down and write out Christmas cards to send out to all my loved ones. It brings such joy to my heart when I can bring joy to the hearts of others.

I don't usually get into the Christmas spirit until it snows. We got a dusting of snow last night, but we need a lot more snow. Christmas is not the same without snow :) I also like Christmas music, but the radio stations have started playing Christmas music so early that by the time Christmas comes around, I am sick of it. Needless to say I will be in the spirit when we get more snow.

Hi mindym! I agree with you with the snow! We had snow over night and were very white about two weeks ago and since then it has rained a lot and it has all melted away into one big mud puddle with many gray days! This does not help either I do agree there! ~Heavens~

I think of Christmas was when we celebrate God coming to the Earth as a babe, and that the wise men brought gifts. So we give gifts to others. And it is a time to meet family, get together, have Christmas concerts, and sing. It does come naturally to me, but I am not much into shopping. But this year has been difficult so it took me some effort to get into the spirit since I was also worried about my health and my husband's.
