if i have my laptop plugged in the whole time while im using it to where the battery doesnt go dead or if i use it on the battery only and then charge it when its dead?
im wondering if having it plugged in is going to make it power it and then try to charge it too to where its using more electricity or something (thats probably not possible but im wondering..)
and i know my hubbys laptop battery is fried so when he left it plugged in and even when it was off it was like still trying to charge constantly and our electric bill was huge all the time where as now i unplug it when its not used and the bill dropped..
am i on to something or does it even matter??i hate running on battery then getting that stupid pop up saying plug in or die type thing.. but if it is wasting electricity i want to stop doing it that way

From what I have gathered in information iot seems all electrical things still pull electricity even when it is off. I watched a program several months ago and the woman showed her electric bill before and after she unpluged everything she could. You can't unplug your Frig. or the clocks that wake you. This woman unpluged everything she could and her electric bill went down quite a bit. I can't remember how much but it was enough to pay attention to. She proved that it worked by the decress in her bill.

Conserving electricity is very hard to do these days. I think charging the battery and then using the battery up to the last minute would conserve energy because then the battery would be out of energy and that would make you want to throw it away or say that i don't have time to charge so i'll do it some other time or even possibly say that you forgot where you put the charger. The possibility of the other choice conserving energy would be unlikely because not only would you have to leave it in, you would also have to make sure how long you put it and make sure you don't overuse the charger to make the bill go up. I think the smart choice would be to turn all the lights off in the house when you charge it so the conservation of electricity balances out. Maybe there is another way, but i can't think of it right now. You should get a battery that lasts longer that way you don't have to charge the laptop all the time. Of course batteries like those don't exactly come cheap. Am I right?

Well, as long as it is plugged and it has a transformer it is literally using or consuming electricity. I guess you already have the answers from the different post so there is no need to elaborate. It is very important to save on electricity most especially now that the prices of commodities are going up. Best to you.

It really won't make any difference. It is goin to take "X" amount of energy to power your lap top and it doesn't matter if it's coming from the battery or the charger. The charger is just a little stronger than the battery but not enough to even measure the difference. Just make sure you don't leave a bunch of charger plugged up when you are not using them. My laptop charger only puts out 3.5 amps and 65 watts. That about the same as a 6 watt light bulb. That will only about 3 cents a day if you run it 24/7.

i just keep it plugged in while im using it and then unplug it when im not.. i know i noticed with my hubbys laptop having a fried battery it was really making our electric bill high it seemed because he kept it plugged in and i think the charger kept trying to charge it even when it was off but since the battery is screwed up it would never take etc..

As a tree hugger (hah) i try to save as much electricity as possible! And i recently read your comment where you said the screen dims if its only running on battery. Well, At night before you go to bed charge it. That way it has full battery than when you plug it into the wall it will be using less energy because it already has alot. But it saves you from those killer headaches :]

i just keep it plugged in but i wonder if its charging as i am using it and using power or if its just using just the power its using by being on and since the battery is already charged its not doing anything to it..
jeeze it makes no sense when ever i try to type it out lol..
there is suppose to be a way of stopping it from dimming (energy save) when its on battery only but i havent figured it out yet(

If it has a transformer or adapter attached to it, it will still suck electricity out of your socket. I suggest fully unplugging everything not in use. Your best chance at using less electricity would to use while plugged in, and let it fully charge, and then fully unplug it from the wall while it is turned off. I also suggest that you make sure lights you aren't using are turned off and unplug unnecessary items like routers from the wall when you are done with them. Every little bit counts.

The only way to know for sure is to get a meter to measure the current that is used when you have it plugged in all the time vs when you are charging it and using it at the same time when the battery is flat.
I too am thinking the same question when I got my laptop.
But I have not gotten around to getting the meter to measure it yet. One meter cost a few hundred dollars. And I am wondering if it would be worth it.
Typically, a laptop battery can last about 2-3 hours for normal surfing on the web. So imagine, if you can set a timer to turn on and off the power to the laptop, I am sure you will save some money when comparing to charing it all the time.
Maybe asking the vendor of the laptop you are using may help in the question on the consumption when charging and empty battery while using vs plugged in with a full battery.

Ever since I bought my own place, the price of electricity has increased by two fold!
And I have been thinking hard on how to reduce my usage.
Already I have cut back on using the dryer and leaving some of my lights on.
The computer usage at home has also been reduced to a few hours a day compared to 24/7.
And if this method really works, I may even consider replacing my desktop with a laptop so that I can continue running my programs and not spend so much on electricity.
That is why I am working my butt off to try and earn me a laptop from the online ventures I am on. Heh heh heh... do update us if you can get your friend to lend you the meter to do the tests.

uhmm. i would advise u to turn off ur laptop while charging it. cause the electiricty continue running while ur using ur laptop and charging it. it is the best way also while your charging ur laptop turn off those electricity devices that u dont use in that time.

I am guilty of leaving my laptop plugged in and leaving my desktop computer on.
What I always try to do though is turn off lights when I don't need them. Often during the day I won't use lights at all. I like the feel of natural lights and don't' find a need for other lights (the bathroom is about the only place light is really needed). By nature and without noticing I'll shut off lights all the time. My fiance hates this as sometimes I'll just shut the bathroom light off automatically while he's in the shower. Woopsie. :)
