When my time comes to leave this earth I am down as a organ donor. So if my organs are any good to anyone, they are more than welcome to have them as I certainly won't be needing them anymore. If a immediate family member needed an organ transplant while I was alive and it was something like a kidney, I would have no hesitation. If we were compatible then they could have the organ providing I did not need it to survive that is.
Extended family members would need some careful consideration though. I am sore sure that I would be willing to donate an organ to complete stranger unless of course there was an exchange involving a family member. The exchange system has happened here in Australia a few times already and it is a good one. It works when several people need an organ transplant but none of their own family is compatible or the family members are unable to doante for some otoher reason. If one of the family members is compatible and willing to donate their organ to a stranger, it can happen. The last instance I read about this happening 3 people are alive and doing well as a result of this exchange between members of the 3 patients. The 3 people involved received an organ from one of the relations of one of the other patients.
I would worry about donating an organ to a complete stranger because what would happen if one day one of my children or grandchildren needed an organ to live. It is something I would need to give very careful thought to as I am not sure I could live with myself if I gave away one of my organs and could not help a family member who needed it at a later time.

Yes, definitely I would donate a kidney to any one of my family members. To donate to a complete stranger while I was alive would be a lot harder for me to decide, and most likely not. I am an organ doner so when I die I hope that my organs are used to give someone a better life.

My husband is in this very position right now. His older brother has only one kidney and has been having some problems with it so he asked my husband if he would be willing to donate one of his should it become necessary and he was a match. My husband's younger brother has been fighting cancer for a couple of years so he can't. My husband did not hesitate to agree. If one of my family members needed a kidney I would be happy to donate one of mine, too, but I'm not sure about a stranger. I am an organ donor though so all of my organs are up for grabs when I go.
