If you are looking to get the graphics card for playing games then you will need to check all the specs for that graphic card. Just check which Pixel and vertex shader version that graphic card has, check the HT&L version, all these kind of things. These should be the latest version coz even if u have versions slightly lesser than the one required to play the game then some games with high requirements might not work properly.

GeForce 8600 GT is regarded as the best in price & perfromance together for games. So check it out and look out for the features of each graphics card with the latest versions.

ATi Cards always have the hand of performance and quality higher then Nvidia, i currently have an Nvidia Graphics card and it sux, the other downside to Nvidia cards is Cost, ATi always beets them in that area as well.

well I have done some research and I have read that Nvidia is better. I have had two types of cards of nvidia and I have never had any problems with them. the video card I have now is a GeFORCE 8500GT 1GB DDR2 memory, and runs at 450 Mhz, its HD, vista ready and also SLI which means I can connect another video card of the brand to have much better graphics.

It really depends on your needs.
If you are looking for a budget card and don't need to play INTENSE games or don't care for Ultra High vs. High settings (I use that figuratively) then ATI probably has better deals for you. NVIDIA is still very, very competitive in that range so do your research. Look up benchmarks for games you are interested in and compare it to the rig you will have and all that good stuff.
If you are looking for the ultimate in performance without a worry about budget, though, NVIDIA is the way to go.

As many have noted ahead of me, you'd be better served if you get an nVidia GeForce 8 series card. It is a bit pricey, but you would really be paying for a really good quality card which should last you for a good few years before either nVidia or ATI comes up with even more mind numbingly advanced video card technology to make things even more realistic as it is now.
