The problem with Yao is that he's so patriotic [he loves China so much] that even when he's really drained from the long NBA season, he just couldn't say no when the need for the Chinese National team comes along. See the last NBA season for a prime example. He was injured in midseason, and his recovery would have been around 6 months to ensure that he wouldn't have any lingering injuries, but since it's the Olympics and his country is clamoring for him, he just couldn't say no. He's been like that throughout his career. Every offseason, there seems to be some tournament that the Chinese team needs to attend to that forces Yao to drag himself over to play even more. Every other player gets some rest during the offseason [even other international stars like Manu Ginobili, Dirk Nowitkzi, etc], but Yao labors through that off time to play even more.
Until he finds a way to somehow get some rest during the offseason for the next few years, his nagging injuries might get the best of him, and that would be a shame for all of basketball.
