I am an extra fluffy sized girl and my best friend is so skinny should could hide behind a toothpick. Here is the thing...she eats more than i do...her opinion of my eating habits is that i eat air!!!! She has actually yelled at me because i do not eat enough. We went to a fast food place one time and i got a junior bacon cheeseburger and a medium fries and that filled me up. She got a junior bacon cheeseburger, five piece chicken nuggets, and a baked potato and ate it all. Then she tells me when she goes there she usually eats more than that. No one believes me that i don't eat much because i am a big girl and because a lot of obese people using it as an excuse, no one believes me when i tell them the reason i am the size i am. I really do have a thyroid condition i have to take medication for, and for a long time i had to get blood work done every three months, but because i been doing well its only once a year now. Now how fair is it my best friend eats more than i do and is super skinny?? Why is it hard for people to believe that i don't eat much? Ever had a friend skinner than you and ate more than you did??

First of all, people need to stop judging based on what they SEE. Second of all, I see that you have a thyroid condition. Dysfunctional thyroids are responsible for two major health conditions - inability to lose weight despite strict diet and exercise because of medication side effects plus low thyroid function, or inability to gain weight because of hyperactive thyroid (ups metabolism to the point where the person cannot even maintain weight).
I know exactly what you're talking about, even though unfortunately I match your best friend's description. I don't criticize or comment about how people eat though, unless they are complaining about their weight and not eating anything. I do not feel that it's healthy for someone to obsess to the point where they don't eat in order to control or lose weight. There has to be a balance such as eating a little less and adding exercise to the mix. MY best friend complains that I eat more than she does but I'm smaller, and sometimes I do seem to eat more, but I try to balance. I also work out a LOT to mitigate when I splurge on treats. To be honest, unless I SEE someone pigging out, I don't think eating habits ALONE have that much to do with someone's size. With all the information out there about health, there are so many known factors that influence someone's body, from genetics to health conditions to exercise to medications. Together with other things, eating habits do contribute either toward or against a healthy weight but are not a stand alone factor.
Do you think you eat a reasonable amoount per day? Have you ever kept a food journal? What you ordered is a typical order for me, sometimes I get a couple things off the value menu or I get myself a kids meal. I try to save the big orders of things for when I go somewhere special and the food is extra appealing - like a nice dinner date or a special celebration. I don't generally apply that to fast food lol. Even though I am thin, I know people who eat more than I do and don't seem to NEED to exercise. i chalk it up to them having a faster metabolism than I do and i guess they are just lucky. I do the best I can with what I've been given and that's all I can do.

I eat on average one meal a day and its usually a small meal. My problem is is that i am not getting hungry or when i do get hungry, by the time my food is done i am no longer hungry and if i force myself to eat, even a small amount, i get sick from it.

I understand your condition I know 3 people with an underactive thyroid and two of them are skinny though not sure why because I know it slows your thyroid down which in turns slows your metabalisim and you need meds to keep it going to pretty much stay alive... I on the other hand have and overactive tyroid which my heart rate speeds along causing my metabalism to burn food more quickly I'm always hungry eat lots and never overweight I try and try to put weight on but loose it so quickly.... It must be hard for you but surely your friends would understand... I hate having and overactive tyroid but everyone thinks it's cool cause you lose weight but It's the worst thing ever I struggle daily trying to get the energy to do things... I would hate to have and underactive more though.... Taking meds daily for the rest of your life, that's a struggle... All the best to you pheonixstar

It whent into remission than it came back, I really don't want to have it removed, I've had enough ops with Endometrioses... Yeah I get shaky and my heart feels like it's going to jump out my chest and I'm always out of breath.... The first time I found out I thought I was just run down and sleep deprived I couldn't walk my body was about to shut down, I was loosing 2kg a day I was withering away, without knowing why... That was bad but now I'm more the wiser and got on the case quickly....

I had a friend who suffered with hyperthyroid (overactive) and eventually he had surgery. He was constantly keyed up, nervous fidgeting and shaking, and although he forced himself to eat as much as possible every day and control his activity level (ie sit a lot) he was still rail thin and lost weight at the drop of a hat. After the surgery he felt a lot better and was able to put on (and maintain) some weight, which made him healthier in the long run.

As an Insulin dependant diabetic I can relate to having to take Medications that make you look heavy even if there are times you are not eating as much as others think you might always eat as well. I gained actually over 50 pds. being on Insulin before they put me on a New medication I have been able to loose about 30 pds with as well. It can be frustrating for sure.
Have you ever considered talking with your Doctor and see what things you might be able to do to help with this weight issue, or is there something you could be taking to counter act this as well? All I can say, is I am wishing you the best, and just remember things are not always as bad as they seem either.

I have talked to my doctor about it and because of my other health issues its not safe for me to take weight loss meds. Having the lap band done has been discussed, but i started losing weight on my own and i don't really like the idea of having something like that done. I need to exercise more but because i have fibromalyga it hurts so i would exercise for one day and had to take three days to recuperate.

I was like your friend when I was younger. I was also really active and actually wore holes in the bottom of my expensive high quality sports shoes and had to replace them every 6 months. I was probably eating 4,000 - 5,000 calories a day or more. My dates wanted to feed me, thinking I didn't eat enough.
I am no longer able to be that active and have gained weight even after cutting my food in half. More than half. I try to keep to 1,600 calories a day. Less exercise and a middle aged metabolism. It sucks, but that's life.
Low thyroid will cause you to gain even without eating much.
One of my dogs has low thyroid and takes meds, is on a severely restricted diet. She get 1/3 the amount of my other dog and it's diet food were my other dog gets regular. Her weight is coming off ever so slowly, but you would think with only getting 1 cup of diet kibble a day she would be a stick. No it's my other dog eating 3 cups who's the skinny one.

When i was younger i was skinny, it wasn't until about five years ago that i started putting on weight and i gained about a hundred pounds in less then a year and the doctors finally realized something was wrong. Getting the weight off is the hard part.

Anytime there is a large weight gain or loss without an obvious reason, the doctors need to check for health problems. Taking off weight gained by under active thyroid is really hard.

It has something to do with your throat condition and your friend's metabolism. Your friend eats a lot but is not getting fat. She's so lucky. She eats a lot, doesn't get fat, doesn't need to exercise to keep herself fit.
Come on, do not feel bad. Everyone's still sexy, not just the slim ones around. If you're confident and sexy deep inside, it still shows outside. Cheers!

I used to be thinner years ago, but about eight years ago I started to get on the fluffy side. I tried exercising and dieting. I went to the doctor for a checkup and found out I had overactive thyroid. That explained my golf ball sized thyroids. I have to watch what I eat and I don't exercise because at work I'm on my feet all day. My cousin who's on the thin side eats like a horse and doesn't gain any weight. My metabolism is on the snail side so it takes longer for me to lose my fluff. If I lose weight that's okay. If I don't lose weight that's okay too. Have you seen the commercial where a woman is sitting on a bench eating a hamburger and the model sitting next to her looks at her and says "I hate you"? The woman with the hamburger says "thank you".

Hello!
Don't worry about your friend. You should not get upset nor angry just because she eats so much and doesn't gain weight. I believe in you when you do say that you do not eat too much. But people's organism are different, you know? As you said, you have to take medication and all. But hey, don't worry. As long as you are working to change yourself, everything is fine.
Just stay out of the fast food stores.
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

It's hard for people to believe that a plus sized person doesn't inhale food at every meal. Some are indulgent constantly, others eat modest meals mostly.
My friends didn't eat more than me we about ate the same. However, they were the ones complaining about how "fat" they were... Yep all 94lbs of them right?!?!? That I think was the hardest when they complained that they were fat and they were wearing all the clothes I never could (mind you back in the early 90's they didn't have the selection of modern styles like they do now). But one of those skinny minnies got depressed when her hubby passed and she got up to a 14 so she knows both sides of the coin and how hard it was for her to get back to her usual sz5 of smaller.
((hugs)) don't worry bout it.

That's Hollywood and the fashion industry for ya! Marilyn Monroe was a 14 and the average US Womans size is a 16. Atleast some countries are banning pin-thins in the modeling world as they are just too thin to portray any kind of healthy image. But IMO most models are too thin and the ones that are "average" are canadates for Plus Modeling even at an 8 or atleast that's what I recall from America's Next Top Model.

I could never wear a size five...even when i was skinny. My bone structure and shape would never allow it. The smallest i could be is a size 12, and whats upsetting about that is the fact that some still consider that fat.

yeah its hard to believe especially when they didn't know your real condition. People believe that if you are fat you eat a lot. Me, i am thin but i eat a lot but i dont get fat. I dont know the reason behind that but i know that i have a very fast metabolism. All of the thin people who eats a lot of food and dont become fat have a fast metabolism in their bodies. Me, sometimes people dont believe that i am eating a lot of food because i am skinny, they think that i am not eating that much. They only believe me when they see me eating so many foods..hehe...and they couldn't believe that i am glutony when it comes to food. People judge on what they see..on what first impression they get...but it will only change if they will know the reason..

My brother is super skinny but eats junk food and bacon fried in butter! it's so strange. i think i inherited the fat gene or something because i gain weight really fast. oh well :)

I think that we've all had a skinny friend and it doesn't seem fair but really observe how she or someone else eats. One of my friends seemingly ate all of the time and in the same quantities that your friend did. The real revelation came when I really watched what she ate in a day. Essentially, the only thing that she ate was that one large meal every day. She routinely skipped breakfast and dinner. Your thyroid condition makes it more difficult for you to lose weight. Do you exercise? I had a difficult time controlling my weight until I stuck to a regular program of weight training and cardio. You need both. The weight training will strengthen and build muscle. Muscles burn calories. Fat does not. Then I do 45 minutes of cardio to burn off calories. You don't have to start with 45 minutes just work up to it gradually. Good luck.

yeah with pheonixstar1982's health conditions she needs to stay away from most if not all exercising because (i too have fibromyalgia a chronic pain condition) 1 day of exercising can cause pain for days and some people weeks (even if you keep up and stick with it your body never gets used to it).. i know i used to exercise when i was younger and now i cant because of fibromyalgia pain.. not to mention she has really bad knees and anything she does could injure them further and most exercises need some kind of movement in the knees to be effective..

Nope my friend really does eat a lot. In her own words she snacks 50 times a day, and that does not include the meals she eats. I try to exercise, but i have fibromalyga and after so long its very painful. I could exercise for like one day and take three days to recuperate. I try to be as active as i can with additional pain.

Every time eating too little, may feel hungry soon, and want to eat something that actually eat more, so can not be thin.
Also do not eat too fast, you have already eating too much when you do not feel full.
Each should eat slowly, feeling full 80% stopped.
Sorry for my poor English.

I've always been a very slow eater and have always been a big woman. I'm sure it could be worse. It's more important to exercise, which I've rarely bothered to do, and watch the foods and portions that you eat. Sometimes it's not WHAT you eat but the amount that you are eating.

It all depends on who you ask if i was extremely overweight or not. I do not look like i weight as much as i do, everyone tells me i carry it well. My friend that i mentioned in the post doesn't even believe i weight as much as i say, she says there is no way. Anyway, if you go by popular culture i am over a hundred pounds over weight for my height and age. If i go by what the doctors recommend my weight be..i need to lose about sixty more.

it has something to do with metabolism you have a slow metabolism i too iam thick and i don,t eat but one meal a day.i take that meal and strech it by eating small potion.your frind have a high metabolism she burns her food up thats why she is able to eat so much.

All my life. It has to do with the way your particular body burns the food that you eat. They always refer to it as your metabolism. Eating breads, starches, and such will keep the pounds on, too. I learned this through learning to eat what I needed to for my diabetes, and actually lost weight by eating healthier. Just remember that many people are stupid and some stay that way and you will hear the same things all your life. Ignore them, since they aren't worth knowing in the first place.

People who are skinny have very fast metabolic rate. This is natural because skinny people digest things very quickly as compared to others, thats why, your friend who is skinny requires alot to eat. Your metabolic rate is slow thats why you do not require that much to fill you up.

I believe you!
Now that your thyroid medication is working well, you should be able to start to lose weight, altho it might be harder than for the average person. Did you ever consider that it might be that you eat too little?? If you eat too little, your metabolism can drop to the point that your body will hoard calories!
The fast food is not going to work tho. That will just add weight to you, no matter how little a meal you eat. I learned the hard way about that. I was working so much some years back that most of the time all I ate the whole day was a Wendy's single (no cheese and no mayo) and a snack some days. Occasionally, some fries or baked potato. That's it for the day, and I was walking dogs all day and evening. I still gained tho not a ton, and the doctor told me I wasn't eating enough, plus what I did eat was too fattening.
At that time I was also drinking a LOT of soda, and that really packs on the weight too. Totally empty calories that don't even fill you up. Even the diet soda adds pounds but they don't know why.
So now here's the kicker for me.
I was in a car accident, sat around for over a year, and gained a lot of weight.
But now, I am not eating only fast food, I never drink sodas at all, and I eat a pretty healthy menu, but still I don't lose any weight.
I just stay the same. I have diabetes and that makes it hard to lose weight, but it can be done. No one knows why I don't lose.
So I feel your pain!

Star, you said so yourself.. that you have a thyroid condition. Anyone who says it's just an excuse then they don't know much about anything. Some people (like your friend) have a fast metabolism. While others have a slow one, a way to increase your metabolic rate is through exercise. I have a friend like that to, granted i wouldn't be classified as obese but overweight yes... so i try hard to watch what i eat. Kids don't like coming over because i don't have a lot of yummy things stashed lol... yes im guilty of chocolate or cookies but i don't always get them =P
It has a lot to do with genetics as well as lifestyle. A person who is more physically active is likely to have a faster metabolic rate to say the least over time... however, if a person who is physically active (sports, walking, exercise and so on) coupled with genetics makes for a bottomless pit of a person being skinny lol... yes life ain't fair but since when was it ever right?
