What is the best SEO advice that you had learned?

I am starting to learn the tough ways of doing SEO on my blogs. It is not an easy feat, because everything related to SEO is not set in stone.
What is the best SEO advice that you had learned?

The best seo advice i have heard is "removing duplicate content from our own blog".
If we have categories and archieves, the search engines will consider the archieves and categories as 2 different links and duplicate content will be formed. so we should remove this by using no-index on either archiebves or categories.

By categories do you mean a column containing title tags? And search engine doesnt consider 2 similar links as duplicate but as "Internal" links. For eg you can have a link on your homepage about an article which is on your last page and also on any other page.
