CD sun catchers

laser disc - I know it isn't a great picture. This is a laser disc. I crocheted two pieces the same and then around the edges of both, encasing the disc. My husband put a tiny hole near the top edge, to put a small cord or ribbon through. I have the cord long enough for the disc to twist and turn, the light reflects off the disc spaces that show through the crochet, flashing nice colors. The laser disc has the reflective surface on both sides, when I use smaller cd disks I put two of them with the label surfaces together, leaving the reflective surfaces on the outside.

I have been making these for friends and family for a few years. I have never tried to sell any, not sure how much to charge if I do try to sell them. While I am sure that I am not the only one who has ever done this, I haven't seen of them anywhere. I have seen other crafts using old cds but not any like this. My family and friends really like them and I see them hanging in their homes in places where there is lots of light and air movement. If you make them be sure to hang them so they can move freely. Sooooooo, what do all of you think of them?? good idea?? dumb idea???

I don't remember seeing them anywhere before I started to make them. And my first idea was to use them as a base for coasters. But I didn't like using yarn on them. So as I crocheted a thread cover for them I saw how pretty the reflective surface was coming through the spaces in the crocheted piece. The darnest ideas come out of the blue!

Great idea, they must look good when they hang in the window and catch the daylight!! I guess it would be ok to use unused cd´s too, but there might be enough of used ones lying around.. I used to put two cd´s together and hang them in the garden to scare the birds - for protecting the strawberries.. It worked well to tie them together using the hole in the middle too..
