if asked me that question i wouldnt know what to say as i prefer big / large dogs.... i have always been a tomboy in nature all my life.... i still am a tomboy..... and i always liked the big breed of dogs.... so i was wondering whether people actually have a liking towards a dog because of the size of the dog....petite girls like small breeds of dogs like the daschund or toy poodles or miniachure..... and guys like the big ferocious breed like the rott, doberman, mastiffs etc.... its not all the time like this but i would like to know from different people who own dogs as to why they own that particular breed and also from the people who dont own any dogs as of now and would like to own one..a.s to why they would want the breed of dog they want to buy !!

Love big dogs. They are simply more substantial, more real. Can't stand the yap/ yip of those tiny dogs. Sorry to all you small dog owners out there; but what in the hades is the point of those meals on legs?
In Texas we call them "stompers". This is because everytime they run at you yipping and yapping the first reaction is to stomp on them (just joking, sort of).
But big dogs love them. Right now I have two dogs.
Miles, a 6 year old British Mastiff. He is awesome at 228 lbs of pure muscle. He has a brindled coat. He is getting older now and is having a bit of a rought time of it. I resuced him from a puppy factory and though he is pedigreed he was born with hip displasia. Dogs of his size and stature generally don't live as long because of joint problems, at least if they have humane owners. My vet and I watch him closely.
Scarlett, a 10 year old Mix breed is Rottweiller and Sheppard. She is a delight at 70 lbs. She has the smile and markings of a Rottweiller, medium length hair, but the personality of a shepard. She still has the energy of a puppy though. She loves Miles and often will curl next to him trying to keep his bones warm.
I have had other dogs in the past including:
Chow/Lab mix (coolest dog ever) looked like a black chow with the tongue and all lived to be 15
Giant Lab
CoonHound
Standard Poodle (childhood pet)
Love big dogs

Hello, shonali.
I own a boxer. The breed is a medium sized dog, pretty interactive. He certainly is for people who want a company. The boxer never leave us alone. He is always there, standing by us. He also needs a lot of attention, so, if you are not going to be at home, you should not get one. He is playful and extremely gentle. He does not attacks anybody. We have seen him angry already, but he does not attack until it is necessary.
But one thing you should be careful about boxers: they are extremely aggressive towards other dogs. They cannot stand any other dog walking, and they start barking and want to get the dogs at any cost. Boxers hardly ever bark, by the way. They are very quiet.
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

Thanks for the compliment of calling me petite!! LOL. I have had all sizes of dogs, from an Irish Wolf hound/Royal Standard Poodle mix to toy poodles to Rottweilers. I currently have three mini dachshunds and am taking care of my sister's pitt/lab mix. I too am a tom boy and have always been one, but the size of dog doesn't matter to me. I am really getting hooked on the little clowns contained in the tiny container that is a mini dachshund!! They come up with the craziest ideas and constantly have me laughing.
One of my Rottweilers, Kitty, was such a sweetie but she weighed in at a whopping 150 pounds. I was living with my Mom at the time and I would do the oil changes and lube jobs on her van. One day as I was crawling out from under the van, Kitty, for some reason, decided to sit on my chest! I tried to get her off and all she would do is kiss my face, which made me laugh. The more I laughed the more she kissed. I couldn't call for help because I was laughing so hard! Finally Mom heard the noise and came out to "rescue" me from my keeper. Even she got the giggles over Kitty's antics.
It doesn't matter the size or breed of dog, as long as they are sweethearts. Any dog can be made to be mean... but thankfully, as I look across the couch and see three little angels sleeping and my gaze goes to the floor and my sister's dog is sleeping at my feet, I have four of the most wonderful dogs sharing my life with me. Besides the fact that first thing in the morning it is so much fun to watch the race of dogs...In the lead is a 75 pound pitt/lab mix with three little weiner dogs close behind. It always gives me my morning laugh!!!

Not at all Ellie. I fear them all. All my young life I have had to outrun them. (never been caught). I got bit standing in the doorway of a patient who insisted her dogs were angels all the while barking their heads off at me as I requested her to put them away while I did my visit. 2 big dogs and a tiny one...the infamous King Kong 'chuwahwah' (spelling looks funny...bu, you know the little taco bell dog). That was the one who ran outside quick as a flash and bit me. I wasn't running then, that's how he got me. Give me pet fish. They stay in their own little area and pose no threats.

Well I love all animals cats dogs big and small but if I could get a dog I would most likely pick a larger size dog, because my grandmother owned large dog breeds and Iv always had a fascination for larger animals but as I said I love all animals but if I could pick I would choose a large dog probably a white german Shepard or a saint barnard, I know large dogs have a shorter life expectancy then some small dogs but oh well.

Well personally I would apreciate a small to medium sized dog if I where to get one like a Jack Russel to Rhodesian Ridge back size wise. Nothing smaller or bigger than that, I am not fond of those yappy little bag and lapdogs like Chihuahua's. I find it cruel that rich celebrities dress them up and treat them like baby's when they should be being walked and treated like a pet. I don,t think I could cope with a st Bernard or grey hound either our house is simply not big enough to house something of that size.
Also the dog would have to be short haired because some members of my family suffer from allergies so that's why something like a Jack Russel of Rhodesian Ridge Back would be ideal for our house. I also just have a general liking of Jack Russels. When I was little we used to visit a friend in the country every other Saturday and they had a really friendly Jack Russel so I have generally taken an interest in them from that point onwards.

i totally agree with you.... i hate it too when celebrities actually do that and i keep wondering why in the world would they actually do something like that.... its a dog ..... not a pretty lil dwarf who wants to get dressed up in frilly frocks...all it wants is a good walk...good food and good care and love.... and then these are the celebrities that actually fight for the ruelty for animals....

The size of the dog doesn't matter to me- though i will admit that i prefer any dog that is similar to a wolf (I'm a girl by the way... and wolves are my favorite animal).
So Alsatians and Huskies are my favorite type of dog (yeah i guess they are rather big,) However i helped my mother pick out of dog which was just a little Jack Russell and he's just as sweet.
I'm also rather fond of Border Collies and the 'sheepdog' (You know the fluffy ones!) - We had a Border Collie once, he was called Troy, and he had one blue eye and one brown. He was so pretty, but we got rid of him... (Well my mother did because me and my brother were little at the time...)

The bigger the dog, the bigger the poop! I take dog size into consideration because I keep inside dogs. I clean up their messes in the yard. One goes in a litter box. I have a fenced back yard, but I don't think it is really big enough for a large dog. I don't believe in tying dogs up in a yard. They need to be free to run. I think they should be able to be in the house and get lots of attention and hugs. If I had a huge house with large rooms and a large yard, I would consider a large dog.

nope ~~~ I really don't care about the size of the dogs, but I prefer the smaller ones. I love the dogs, they are my favorite companion, and they are very fun animals/pets to play around with. But then again, I really hate to see those ignorant and violent people who just beat the $#it out of those innocent dogs, makes me want to beat them instead. I love dogs, I have always loved them, I still love our dog we have at home (it's a yorkie :) and I will love them for the rest of my LIFE!!! lol I also like golden retrivers. One of our neighbor adopts one golden retriver and yorkshire terrier, but she said that they NEVER get close to each other. I guess golden retriever and yorkshier terrier hate each other? weird.... but yeah, I really don't care about the size of a dog, as long as they love me and I love them and we can have fun with each other. That's all that matters.

I have a medium breed dog. & yes size does matter to me & I'm a girl. I'm not into the small dogs. I love medium or large breed dogs & they have to be kind of chubby/ big boned looking if you know what I mean. A few of the smaller dogs can be cute & I get a little jealous when people can pick them up so easily, but with a big dog- imo they look more impressive & there is more to hold/ hug.

I want to know that when the dog is an adult if I were to ever have any trouble with an individual that it would protect me. Dogs are very smart creatures and have this innate ability to sense a bad individual. If someone was hurting me and my dog was with me I'd like to know I could rely on it to protect me and I think a little ankle biter may not be so intimidating to my attacker or if someone broke into my house.
That being said i think it all depends on the individual. My fiance and I love huge dogs. We're getting a Husky wolf. It is a cross breed of timber wolf, arctic wolf, malamute and a husky. Needless to say that is one BIG dog :) But a loving one none the less.

I am also a woman who likes Large dogs. I am not so fond of the smaller breeds as I find them very yappy and would not buy one. I am also a fan of muscular dogs, I currently have a basset hound which can be considered a small dog but I like to thik I have a big dog. She is very heavy and very muscular.

Yes.. It does matter to me. I have a golden retriever and I love big dogs. One of the main reasons is that bigger dogs live longer. Also, I've grown up associating small dogs with girlie girls, and paris hilton-like people. Small dogs also yap really high and even though it's not as loud as a big dogs bark, it still really annoys me. Also, to me atleast, I feel that big dogs are more capable of being good companions. Smaller dogs are just for fun, but big dogs really care about you. That's just my opinion. I'm sure lots of people think differently. It's not that I hate small dogs, infact I love them, its just that I prefer big dogs.

I like a dog around 40 lbs. I have had smaller dogs and they are fun. Big dogs are impressive and good protectors. My dog I have right now is Border collie and Skipperky (sp?) mix and is about 40 lbs. She is the size that can curl up and go anywhere with me, and she loves to go. Usually my dogs are around 60 lbs. It's a good size but a little big to fit in smaller spaces. I love dogs they are such good companions and good friends.

I'm not so much attracted to size as I am breed. I like dogs of all shapes and sizes, from Great Danes to Maltese. And not all large breeds are ferocious, some of the largest dogs out there are the biggest babies I've ever met. Nothing like a 135lb dog acting like a 2lb chihuahua. I've also seen some small dogs act like they are big tough dogs, it's really funny!
