Why is married man called husband?

Is the titled given by married woman or husband's in-laws?

I never thought about that, but than I think we can ask the same question for female. why is married women called wife.

I donot think anybody has given tittle Husband. Probably it has come from combination of 3 or 4 words: Hus meaning house bondi (bandi?) means freeholder, bua meaning to dwell. This is according to the unabridged dictionary I have (Oxford).
