American Law, British Law when it comes to guns! Do you own a gun?

I'm probably creating a bit of a controversial discussion here but, I have a crazy kind of interest in the American system! I live in London and as you probably know, we are not allowed to own guns here. This is probably right and appropriate. There's young teenagers as well as kids dying on our streets on a daily basis! However, I do like the fact that, if you live in the States then provided you have a permit, you are allowed to keep a gun in your home! I don't live in the States so correct me if I'm wrong on that note! If a burgler or potential killer had broken into my home I would like to think that I was able to have access to a gun, particularly if the criminal was armed. A gun isn't dangerous, it's only dangerous in the wrong hands! Anyway, this might be my first controversial discussion that I have created! I thought I would have a go and see what other people's views were on this. Andrew
