Well for one thing 30 minutes is way too short for any battery, it sounds like it is time to get a new one. That being said you can do a lot of things to extend your battery life. A big one is to turn down the brightness on your monitor, which you can often do with a function key and always in the control panel. The lower the brightness, the longer your charge will last. If you have a wireless card you can turn that off when it's not in use or when you are out of range of a hotspot anyway, as they tend to draw a lot of power. Things like using the CD drive and running devices plugged into the USB port (like mice, for example) tend to suck power also, so minimize their use to get the best performance.
Hope I could help, if I did rate me best response :D.

Oh I forgot to mention that you can usually get generic models of laptop batteries fairly cheap online. Look for other peoples' reviews of the manufacturer before you buy though so you don't waste your money. Good luck finding a battery.

Hey,
Does your laptop have like power saving features? Mine has one where you can choose how much CPU power can be used. Right now it is only using 20% of the CPU power.

If your battery is old, then i think theres problem in your battery. If you want to increase the battery life, then try using minimum programs at a time and reduce the load on your processor.
