I always thought it meant to look past looks. Sometimes people date people who aren't considered attractive, and people give them crap about it. But to the person who is in the relationship, the person could be the most beautiful person in the world.

We all perceive things differently. What we may find beautiful someone else may not. Some of us only look at the physical and judge beauty on those attributes alone. Others look deeper than that at what is on the inside. These kinds of people make the best friends.

It means that what is ugly to you, may be beautiful to someone else. For example you might have a friend whose girlfriend you think is repulsive to look at, but your friend sees her with different eyes.
