Dumbing Down For MyLot

i think of myself as quite knowledgeable.
i know at least a little bit about a lot of things.
my girlfriend's always telling me i should go on game shows because i know all the answers.
so i start discussions here on myLot accordingly.
i try to talk about things i find interesting about about people, places and things.
i bring up things i discover everyday from the internet, the news and personal experiences.
so, what's the problem???
apparently the majority of people here on myLot don't care about such things.
it seems they don't want to discuss things you have to think about.
when i start a discussion, i get 1 or 2, sometimes zero responses.
but the person that asks "what's your favorite color?" or "when you make a sandwich, do you cut it in half straight or diagonal?" get like 50 RESPONSES!!!
so, i think that's the answer to get a lot of responses here on myLot.
from now on, i will go with the flow and dumb myself down for the maximum myLot experience.
what do you guys think???
have i found the secret of myLot???

Thinking up a serious and deep topic requires a lot of effort. Add this to the time spent on typing up the discussion and we can see why many people here could not be bothered to think up of similar topics. The same thing applies in writing up a response. As a result the number of postings one can do per day is small.
Many myLotters are concerned by the number of postings they can do per day. They come up with simple question which can be answered in a single line. Money is also a motivation since there are my:otters who seem to think that the more postings they make the more money they get. As a result we do not get real discussions.
In conclusion I would say that you have found the secret of getting many responsed.

What people don't realize is that you can make more from one good reply that really gets into a topic than you can for two or three one-liners. Aside from the money, most people just can't think well enough to write more than a couple of sentences. Ask them to really think about something, and they simply get bogged down. What they usually come up with is stuff that they've heard -- from television or their friends. They have no ideas of their own.

I like your term, "Dumbing Down". And, yes, you probably have found the mylot secret. I know when I'm looking through mylot, I run across some of the darnest discussions. I wonder to myself, how on earth do people come up with these things? Obviously, off the top of their head. I'm an over-thinker and tend to 'think outside the box' quite frequently. I guess if I want to continue here on mylot, I need to change my mentality and my way of thinking or just give it up.

yup, now my next project is to try to find a way to start an intelligent discussion but mask it to look like a dumb discussion.

Hi ... I am new here, so have not fallen prey yet to "Dumbing Down" on myLot, the discussion caught my eye though because I often have to "dumb down" in my real life. Sometimes it feels like I speak a foreign language not known to others, I seem to think and feel very different from most other people ... can get pretty lonely. At least I love people and they seem to love me back - as long as I "dumb down" I can participate in general conversations. Sounds like I just got home lol

Yes, you've found the secret. I can find an intelligent discussion now and then, but mostly I just look for the ones that let me pour out a paragraph or two and make the most money possible. To be fair, though, on a few topics, I've found some valuable information, and been able to share what I know, but most topics are shallow, boring, repetitive, and even outright stupid. But Mylot is a wonderful parade of human nature, and sometimes provides real amusement, so I like it for those reasons. The amount of ignorance that's displayed here is amazing, and pretty discouraging. I'm on the internet a lot, so I see it every day, but Mylot is like a concentrated soup. It's endlessly fascinating. Sometimes I think, now I've seen it all. Then someone comes up with something breathtakingly original in ignorance in stupidity. There's probably no end to the variations.
Of course, you know that if you do get many responses to this discussion, most of them will be indignant and deny what you've said. But that's part of the fun.

Ah yes....the secret of dumbing down for mylot- I think everyone goes through it at one point or another- until you realize what you are REALLY here for.
I mean face it- most of us were enticed here by the thought of making a little extra cash and having some good conversation while doing so. But I'm sure there are many others like myself that found mylot to be refreshing as well as rewarding by creating new friendships near & abroad.
I now do not come here for the payout ~ I acutally keep raising my payout everytime I'm about to reach payout...lol.

I don't think that the number of responses have much to do with the topic or content, but more to do with how popular or unpopular you are. A few months ago, someone said that she tested this with a friend. One had been here for longer and had aquired more followers. They both posed the same question/topic (actually against the rules since they were doing that intentionally). The more popular one got 3 times the number of responses. The less popular one got accused of copying.

That is an interesting experiment but I have found that most of the people on my friends list do not bother to respond to my discussions. I often wonder why they bothered to ask to be on it if they are not interested in my ideas.
So it is not just the most popular it is the person who friends are going to actually respond to the discussions. I have started trimming my friends list to remove the one who never bother to respond to mine.

Yes, you have discovered ONE of the secrets, sconi. Many people have joined myLot purely to make money - hence the one-line banal questions. You'll find if you answer them, you never get any response - they are purely there as revenue raising and to generate as much response as possible. Fortunately, after a while it's easy to work out who is here to meet people, enjoy the company of others from different places with different experiences, and you can separate the wheat from the chaff. If you write interesting discussions, it seems many people will find them too long and involved to bother about. When money's involved, people just want to get in and get out - and make their $1 per day. I was amazed when this first became apparent, but many members admit it quite openly, as you'll see if you read any of the 'Did you make payout?', 'What sites can you recommend?' discussions - of which there are many.

thanks guybrush,
i already know you're one of the few that's here to actually have a discussion.
so i'll continue to post intelligent discussions mixed in with a few dumb ones just 4 fun.
that's the thing i like about myLot, meeting people from all over the world,
with different views and perspectives on things.
thanks guybrush.

No, you do not need to dumb yourself down for MyLot. I ignore most discussions such as teh ones you desrcibed. I look long and hard for a worth while discussion, an opinion or an open minded debate. They are hard to find.
I don't get a ton of comments on my posts. Okay occasionally I do. But I also comment more on my friends discussions than create them.

I gave up on getting frustrated with the very same scenario a long time ago sconibear. I consider myslef to share similar beliefs in my own knowledge abilities as you do, but I bombed big time when I first joined and tried to be proactive on a more intellectual level. The good news though, is that over time I have managed to find many like minded people and am able to engage them on this level quite regularly.
The thing we need to acknowledge I guess, is that not only do relatable and easy to answer topics always attract the masses; there are also many members here that have English as a second language that will gravitate towards topics that are as least threatening as possible. As long as I am always able to find both kinds of discussions here then I am happy. Sometimes I too couldn't be bothered with the more complex discussions either.

Just be yourself and dont follow others methods..they have this sort of dumb methods just for fun and its their attitude but i dont think you have a similar attitude like them so try to be innovative and write nice posts and people will automatically come..since i'm new to this place i have not seen much of your posts.so i have added you as my friend so that whenever you write a new post i will receive the intimation and i would surely reply the post if it is nice..happy mylotting..

The dumbest game show I have ever seen would have to be Family Fued. I don't know if everyone is familiar with this, so I'll try a short description.
Family teams are given a question like: What would you find on a beach? They each get a turn, and are given a score which is the percentage of people who also gave that answer in a questionnaire. "Sand" would probably score 60.
I am absolutely hopeless at this game. I invariably go for the lowest response, or one that doesn't even make the cut. To play this game, you have to have the sort of mentality that gets you 156 responses to a discussion in Mylot.com
The area of this site that gives me both endless amusement and endless frustration is the Topic "Thinker". I read most of the posts on that and when I pick myself up off the floor (from laughing), I look at them again and cry.
I have a couple I'm going to try. "Why does my dog lick his balls all the time?" and "What is better? Peanut butter, jelly, or both together?"

I want some sort of award. Being in a silly mood I actually went with topic two half an hour ago, and I've already hit 8 responses, which beats most of my topics after a week. It may not reach my record of 44, which was also a pretty dumb topic, but hey. Point proven.

Yes! I know what you mean. I have many discussions started with no replys to them. I had an asthma one that I started about inhalers and got no replys to it. I guess no one has asthma on MyLot.
I do not know why some discussions do really well. Maybe it is easy just to answer the non complicated short ones but I think it is great when someone posts up something I am really interested in.
I hope you get some better replys to this discussion. Take care and good luck sconibear

sonibear,
The majority of people here aren't looking for an intellectual conversation or discussion, they are looking to make as may responses as possible to boost their numbers so they can reach payout.
If you put something on here that requires too much though, it will be passed-up for something that's quick to answer.
Happy MyLotting!

yup, you're absolutely right.
what people don't realize is you get paid more for thought out discussions with some content than they get for one line "questions" like what color are your underwear.
but you're absolutely correct that some people try to crank out discussions like an assembly line.
thanks for responding Kitten......MEOW.

If this is really the case then I'd rather not even participate. I have fun with silly topics and all, but I'd rather write about things I enjoy... and I enjoy thinking.
Are there just a lot of kids on this site?

Hi! I guess it's not right to say that you will "dumb yourself" to conform to mylotters' discussions because it's like saying that mylotters are dumb. I just believe that mylotters give more attention on everyday happenings of there lives. Mylotters like to socialize and interact through this website not dwelling much on thoughts that are not even important like when it can be sensed that the writer just wants to boost his ego..
I believe most of mylotters are intellectuals.

you're wrong, i didn't say myLotters were dumb, i said some of their discussions were dumb.
asking what your favorite color is isn't giving attention to everyday life.
having an intelligent conversation about world news or the latest goings on is.
most people here just try to pump out one line discussions.....which aren't really discussions, thinking they'll make more money, but my lot actually pays more for postings with content that are one or two paragraphs long.
and there's plenty of people here that like to give some thought to there discussions and their responses........you just have to find them.
Happy myLotting.

I use to think the same way that you do, but I realized that I am only hurting myself. If you are a regular here then people that are intelligent or enjoy a lively debate will eventually gravitate your way.
I do think that for many here on Mylot, for them it's easier to keep the discussions simple if they are into making the money as fast as they can. If you aren't into making the money and more for intelligent discussions then you aren't in for the money as much.

LMAO yeah I started noticing stuff like that, its pretty ridiculous.
Not to mention how ridiculously bad peoples spelling is, I have read many peoples responses to things and couldn't even comprehended half of the stuff they were trying to get across. I posted a view topics, some of them being very important but yet I haven't gotten any responses. Not to point any fingers but there is a "teacher" on here who's spelling is so bad I am not even sure how she got the job, its pretty crazy, so yeah dumbing it down for these people might be a must.. lol

try putting you bottom line up front. Tell people the question or main though, then explain it. Nobody likes to pour through a paragraph to try and find the bottom line! This may make it easier, but as far as being too smart, if you type it and nobody can understand it, they probably won't take the time to try. I have to deal with dumbing down everyday at work!
