It is indeed a fiction novel, but dan brown has made it like it was real by using the real historical events on the novel. He tried to draw the red lines between those events and made it as if it is was true. It is indeed amazing how he could make the readers believe that the novel he wrote was true

it is TOTALLY fiction It is such a convincingly told fabrication that people are thinking its real, but nearly EVERYTHING was made up. Even the church sect isn't as bad as he's made it.

I have read the novel and later watched the movie. As far as I know, all the historical events that was mentioned in the book (when I analyzed it) are FACTS. The Da Vinci Code is just a fictional story with fictional characters, however, it is still under controversy that such historical truths were all uncovered by Dan Brown and then put it all together to create a very amazing novel.

It's fiction based on a historical theory that's been around for some time. I don't think Dan Brown claims to have developed the theory himself (since it had already been published years earlier in "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail"), he just found out about this theory and thought it would make a good basis for a thriller, which is perfectly legitimate. As to whether there's any truth to the theory - I'm no historian, but certainly the Gospels are debatable as there's very little surviving hard evidence of what was going on in those days.
