I no longer get to enjoy the family traditions since I have no family here in California. I was stupid enough to move away to a place that I have no family and / or friends. I miss home!!
Anyway, the thermometer is actually in Baker, California. Bakersfield is a different city, but at least you were half correct. LOL.

I'm not sure that I have the absolute weirdest family tradition, but I bet you it's top ten. When boys turn 13 in my family, you have to eat thirteen whole beef stake tomatoes to prove that you have moxie and are a man. Girls never participate in this ritual, until I came along. I spent much of my entire 12th year lobbying the powers that be in my family to let me undertake the tradition because it was sexist not to, even at twelve I was a feminist. I liked tomatoes up until that point to a degree, but when the powers that be finally relented, there was no way I was going to give up, not happening, not possible! No one would have ever let me forget it in my entire life.
But when I got to tomato eleven, I was very sick, however, as I said before, I wasn't going to give up - not an option. I finished all thirteen tomatoes, the only girl ever to do so in the history of my family as far as I know, but I haven't eaten raw tomatoes since, except accidentally. I like it on pizza and in pasta sauce but raw tomatoes make me want to gag.

Honey chil', you couldn't find a more boring family than mine. I think the only tradition was trying to get dad to tell his stories of growing up. He could spin a great story. I wish I had the forethought to have recorded them! I wish I had the canary story, or the pilot training stories recorded - they were great!
