Are you always feeling after vanity

I think vanity isn't a good thing. But everyone has it more or less, especially for girls. You pay tribute to a girl in any form and she may feel very happy at most time whether your words are true or not. I don't know whether it is called vanity or not. There is a story which makes me very deep memory. When I was at middle school. In one test I took the second place. But to my suprise my parents were not satisfied with my result. They told me that the child who ranked the first in this test was so smart and you must be the number one in the next test.Why? Why they didn't praise me? Only because I didn't get number one? Or they felt I let them down? I thought many childen may become tools which for parents to show off. Do you have the same felling? Can you give me some suggestions?
