I have started writing a novel, but am stuck because I have all of these ideas in my head of what I want to write about, and then when I sit down to write about them, I can't get them out on paper.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to start this novel process or the steps to take in writing a novel?
Perhaps I should start with a short story or something like that. I have written a children's book but never pursued getting it published.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks

I have always wanted to write a novel...always. I always get half way through and lose interest..I hate that because I have all these ideas in my head too. I thought about writing short stories too. You should pursue the publication of that childrens book. It might inspire you to write your novel.

Yes I would love to write a novel at some point in my life. When I was younger I was more interested in writing but I've branched out into other means of creativity now so I don't have as much time. I have ideas for novels though and hopefully one day I'll write them.

I have always wanted to write a novel, but I have never gotten more than three or four chapters out before I get frustrated and quit. My problem is that I don't do enough planning beforehand. I get ideas and I get so excited about them that I just start writing without thinking it through, and it works for a short while but then I run in to a brick wall. :\ I have written a couple short stories and lots of poetry, and that seems to work better for me, but I still have the ambition to write a novel. I don't even think I want to attempt to get published. I just want to do it for myself, because I love writing!
My suggestion would be to do lots of planning before you sit down to write. Make sure you know your characters and your plot REALLY well before you start, and that should help you. Also, don't feel like you have to have a masterpiece on the first try. That is another thing that always trips me up. Just get your ideas out, and you can always go back and revise later! I wish you luck. :)

I find when I do a writting project that is longer thans 2 or 3 pages I loose alot of ideas in the writting process. I suggest you play the story out chapter by chapter in your mind. Find a comfortable quit spot and record your self tell the story and if you think of something while telling the story just say mental note explain it and go on with the story.
Writting is much easier when you already know what you want to write. I have used this process myself many times and it works great. Give it a shot you really have nothing to loose.
Good Luck,
