I need help plz...how does this work..

If I start a discussion, what happens if I rate those who respond with a +, do I loose points,do they gain points...and what happens if your answer in a discussion was chosen as the best answer...do you get extra points. So far I have rated everybody who responds to my discussions with a +..(hehe I'm here to help !) but loose sometimes I loose three to four points,why?
