God a murderer?

A long time ago, someone came to me and said how can you worship a God that kills innocent women and children? I said what? So they explained. In the Old Testament there is that story where God ordered all the men, women and children be killed. I prayed and asked God why would He do that...why order such a horrible thing to happen? He answered and I am accepting of the answer. I will share that answer with you, but I would like to see what some others will say concerning the question and their understanding of the passage that I am talking about. Let's post!
