Am I alone in writing a discussion topic, or a response to another one. and when I read what I have written before I post, it all makes complete sense. Then once it has posted and is there for the world to see, the punctuation, spelling and grammar gremlins appear. I am alarmed at the mistakes I make. Any English teachers out there ready to teach elementary English to this increasingly illiterate numpty?!

LOL! I know what you mean. I try to blog every day, and one of my regular readers teaches English in Italy occasionally, and he picked me up on my grammar, punctuation and spelling, until he got fed up with having to do it almost daily. I think it's because I type too quickly, as I actually scored 100% in my English GCSE.

Hello Pike - I've never responded to any of your discussions before but I do find them amusing. I was an English teacher for many years and when I read what I have said, I just cringe with embarrassment. Punctuation is out - numb fingers - and no spell check to assist me there!
Listen, I had written and published stories and had my own weekly newspaper column for about 6 years. when you read me you would never think that I possessed that ability.
Lastly - what is a numpty? an expressive word. Did you make it up?
By the way, you write awfully well. Very funny and descriptive. Are you a Brit? I am but have lived in my adopted country over 35 years. Blessings

Welcome to this one Cynthiann. Now I am embarrassed to be in the company of a real live English teacher. I'd better shine my shoes and straighten my tie! I am very impressed by your writing credentials and you are kind to say that you have been amused by some of my own offerings. I have little faith in my ability to write, despite the encouragement of others. Apart from my efforts here, I do it quietly and away from public gaze and to be honest I wish that it were otherwise. I am British, English to be precise. A Numpty is a twerp. I wish that it was original to me, but it is quite well used term here in the South of England.

I do that all the time. It's so frustrating too! Makes me look like a babbling idiot. It usually happens when I'm in a hurry and decide to change a sentence or a word. I type it in the spot and then forget to delete the original. I also have a terrible habit of dropping "s" off the end of words. No matter how many times I read through my post I never catch them all. Good thing we are usually understood in spite of the errors. My typing teacher would be smacking my knuckles with a ruler if she saw all my mistakes! You are NOT alone p1ke!

Hi p1key, it is a good thing that MYLOT is not all about grammar because alot of us would not be here. Yes there are times when we go ahead and type what we think we have in our head and as it is posted then you see that it was not transfer or that the punctuations are or not correct. Such is life isn't it.

No, I do this regularly, don't worry or maybe you should, I don't know.
I still don't know where commas should go and sometimes my computer goes dyslexic but all of my friends know me and usually work out what I mean however badly I've said it.
I can't help you with English because I don't talk proper like what you do.

Oh I am sure that you know you are nowhere alone in this matter.
I never check my things before posting and I seem to miss a lot of letters in my words. Some have had as many as 20 mistakes easily. myLot needs a spell/grammar check function. BADLY!
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRNDPA BOB !!~

Well, my English is actually quite poor, so I always have problem in writing proper English. This is a good site that I can write and practise more, so my English can be improved. As for spelling mistake, as the browser will automatically detect and underline the mistake, so I'm still able to correct the spelling if it's wrong. As for grammar, I've no idea if it's okay or not, but I always try to think before I write, so that others can understand me.

Guilty here. I do that all the time. I do not know how to type but use my 2 index fingers. I call it chicken pecking. I can do it pretty fast too. But i go so fast i make all the spelling errors. Most the time i check it before i submit but every now and then i hit submit them see i forgot to check my spelling. I often invert 2 letters around the wrong way.

I will swear that Mylot changes words. I can understand a typo - say grunpy for grumpy, but sometimes it appears I have typed grumys, which can't possibly be a missed key and makes me wonder what on earth was I thinking? As one who has only recently finished a 90,000 word thesis, I was proud of my proofreading, and I do actually read all my posts before I send them, so some of the things that eventually appear are quite bewildering. And that's not to mention the times I read it and think, Oh lord, I didn't really say that, did I, but those times are clearly the work of a confused and senile brain.

I feel the same way. There are times I feel that I did not write the post the way it appeared but Mylot must have changed the words. Then again it could just be my poor confused brain. Maybe as p1ke says it is the speed with which we post but I do sometimes wonder how I make so many mistakes and not pick them up.

Perhaps writing a thesis is in some ways easier, in grammar and typo terms, than a quick response. Here, we need to encapsulate our idea in an easily readable format that will hold the reader's attention just long enough for them to be bothered to think "I'll respond". We bang our fingers against our keyboards trying to abbreviate and paraphrase without really paying too much attention to how we write. Once done, a quick scan, we see what we want to see perhaps, and then it's to the "post" button. Only then do we start to read what the readers sees, but worse, we are self-critical about it and horror stricken we discover that - w've writen toal rubsh! That's my excuse anyway!!

hi p1!
well yeah, hehe same here...when i write, it is as if, everything is perfect. then when it gets posted, i realize that i have so many errors in it! lol well, i guess it is really hard if you are reading your own work. you can't really see the errors.
i guess it is also the same with our lives. we cannot see the error in our lives unless other people see us and tell us what they are. hehe
alright, till here.
take care and God bless you! :0-)

I usually have no problems with my grammar, spelling, and all except when the keyboard has problems.I've been used to the language since I was small. And I can speak another foreign language other than English because I've learned it since I've entered school-Spanish.I can converse and understand but I have to make it a daily habit so that I'd get used to it.

LOL I know exactly what you mean. I have days when I misspell words and mistype things constantly. It is very annoying to go back over it AFTER it is sent and see the mistakes. It happens to us all I am sure. I am not an English teacher by any means, and it doesn't really bother me when I see it once in awhile.

I hate when that happens, I sometimes check mine for any mistakes and I submit a meticulously perfect response, then the other times, I think who did this chicken scratch.. Why didn't I spell check before hitting submit?? Maybe no one will notice, oh the shame of it all, I do know better.. I think that we do have a huge boatful as we are all in the same boat on this one..

I notice sometimes after I have posted something a whole set of words to be missing or all garbled together...and I am sure it is not just because I am a dyslexic typist at times I think it is because my computer loads pages pretty slow compared to others and I always have multiple tabs open....
But yes it's not all the computer's fault because I could preview th response which I never do....Who has the time?

Personally I don't care about my spelling or puntuation. If I misspell something it's because of a typo or I just don't know how to spell it. Sound it out, you will figure it out, right? Punctuation has never been of importance to me. As long as I get out what I want to say and people understand it then there shouldn't be a problem. And for those that base best response on whether or not grammer and spelling is correct then that is just stupid. I have seen people say that is something they look for when deciding best response. Now does that make sense? Someone could have the absolute best response, but poor grammer or spelling so they won't get picked. That to me is judging people, thinking there answers are not as good because of the way they write. :( saddens me those gremlins are out there. No one is perfect.
