Plagiarist!

December 4, 2008 4:35pm CST
Oooh, I'm seething. Gnashing of teeth, pounding of fists and hammerings of keyboard! Why? Some scumbag just stole one of my articles from Helium and published it on AC. Now I get an email saying I stole his work! Unfortunately for him, I published four others at the same time (all of which are also on Helium), so the proof is on my side. I just can't get over how unprofessional and scummy some people are. He STOLE my work, my thoughts, my writing - all for a few cents. I hope he gets suspended and his genitalia rot. GRRRRRR!

Plagiarism can not be tolerated. At least Helium has those time markers. Make sure you email the techies there and tell them about the stolen article. Check his profile tomorrow and see if he is still on AC. If he is, make sure you leave comments on his articles about the stolen article. I think AC should credit you the amount that he earned off of the stolen article, even if it is only a few pennies. It is your work and you should get paid for it. I write for Helium as well. I feel your pain and completely agree with you on his punishment.

I know it annoys me as well. Haven't had it happen yet but it is probably only a matter of time. Your time and effort is worth well more than the two cents. I just wish writers got the amount of money they actually deserved.

Thankfully I had several articles transferring from Helium to AC at the same time. I'm trusting that he'll be suspended at least - preferably kicked out. To be honest, I'm not worried about the 2c he probably earned from the articles: it's the time, thought and effort that annoy me. AC do seem to take it seriously: their standard email reply even goes into legal stuff! Blimey!

Aren't there time, or at least date markers on those articles? If it comes to having to prove that it is your article, this might be a bit of proof on your side, right?

It's all circumstantial, but yes. I can provide screenies from Helium with all five articles, dated. They're all up on Helium with my name, and I subbed them all to AC on one day. Circumstantial, but pretty strong! Since he only stole one, he's gonna look really dumb if he tries to say it's his - particularly since it's a UK-specific item and he's US-based. Duh.

Oh, well, there ya go. I do understand your frustration and anger over the situation, though. I would be absolutely livid.

oh spike I'm sorry you had to experience this first hand! To think that people can't even take the time to come up with original thoughts of thier own for a few cents ~ they rather take your work....just makes me crazy!! So sorry this happened and I wish his genitalia rots too!!! :)

You should contact the administration at Associated Content and let them know that this has happened. Search for the article on their site and provide them with the link and then provide them with your link (I'd also send them an attachment so they can see exactly when you published your article) I don't believe either Helium or AC tolerates this type of behavior and I wouldn't be surprised to see AC remove the offender, or perhaps allow you to keep the article on their site, under your name. There's nothing wrong with earning money from two sites on the same piece of work. Sorry this has happened to you!

Yikes! Vicious words there. However I think that is horrible to try to profiteer off another person's work regardless if it is over the internet. I hope whatever happens turns out to benefit you. However I can kind of see the natural aspect of taking advantage of such a situation because of their own feelings of subservience. Keep up your good articles and just destroy the plagiarists while you can.

That actually worries me because I just publisehd 2 articles on Helium myself and now I can't remove them. I haven't even made any earnings and it's unsettling to know that has happened. Since you might be more familiar with Helium is there a way to remove an article once you have posted it?

Nope. You could contact them and ask to have them removed, I suppose. Still, AC and Helium are non-exclusive so you can publish on both.

This has only happened to me a couple of times on Associated Content. Honestly, I haven’t checked any of my articles lately. I should do that know. It bugs the heck out of me when people still other’s work. The first time I found an article I wrote on someone’s website, I was so angry I don’t even know how to describe it. I sent a message through the contact section and told them to either take the article down, pay me $15 for the article and leave my name attached with a link back to my Associated Content page or pay me $50 for the article and leave it on their website. They ended up taking it down. But, I can’t believe someone has the nerve to turn around and tell you that you stole the article. That is really low.

I can loan you a pair of vice-grip pliers to use on him to accelerate that rotting process, if you'd like.

I shall remember I am the bigger person. Does that mean I'm big enough to stamp on his head? :)
