I'm glad you said something back to them. I speak English and Spanish and I am American. I do not look Hispanic in any way shape or form and on many different occasions I have spoken Spanish to various people for various reasons.
I remember one time that two men were trimming weeds and doing landscaping at my condominium complex. I am blonde, fair, etc. and they were commenting on how attractive I was and what they would like to do to me, etc. all quite vulgar. Anyhow, they thought that I could not understand them as they were speaking in Spanish. When I responded to them that I do speak Spanish and I do understand everything they were saying and that I was going to go tell my husband and the manager of the condominium complex they were 1. shocked and 2. apologetic.
I love it when I shock people who are ignorant like that. You should be saying hateful or nasty things about others. You just never know who will actually understand you or not.
Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

That is awful. I am really glad you give him sh*t back also. I hope they had red faces when you told them you could speak hindi.
I can speak English and French. We where abroad once and some Germans called me and my husband English B (in German) as we where walking past a restaurant one evening. Well my husband can speak fluent German and told me what they said. I shouted back to them "Ha we are Irish" and they said "oh Sorry""sorry". It did not matter though what we where. No one has the right to do that because they think we cannot understand them.
These people are just mean and nasty. Well done for giving them sh*t back.

Hi j47lee,
ohhh...he deserved it and wish he will not do it again to anyone! I've been around with anyone but I have no idea if I was a victim of criticism or what since I only know English, ANyway, it's great really to learn different languages!

My husband worked at LA airport in one of the restaurants. This mother and daughter came in speaking German. The daughter was complaining about something and the mother told her to knock it off. The daughter said it didn't matter, nobody would understand her anyway. My husband turned around and said (in German), "oh really?" The mother thought it was pretty funny!

Yes, I experienced that. Theres this group of teenagers. They were chinese because it's very obvious on their faces. Theres alot of people in the bus so they just stand in front of me. Then suddenly, they were starting talking in their language, ofcoures none of us in the bus undrestands what they are talking about.
Then suddenly they were laughing. I don't have any idea of what they are talking so I just sit and listen though I can't undrestand what they are saying. In that very moment, I realized how important to learn different languages so that you can undrestand it.

That is horrible! I'm glad you gave them sh*t back!! :) I don't know any other languages other than English but I am trying to learn. I have taken several years of Spanish and I have recently started studying Russian and I hope to someday become fluent in one of these languages. My dream job would be to be a translator so if I ever want to realize that dream then I definitely need to become fluent.
I'm sorry those guys were such jerks to you, but I think that you are really lucky to be fluent in so many different languages.

Hello!
I do know English other than my home country language. However, I never happened to be in a situation like this. I imagine his face when you told him that you knew how to speak Hindi. He probably got all scared. People sometimes can be so childish. They think that, just because they learn a different language, they can call others bad names in that language and it will be alright. It is a kind of showing off as well. He took what he deserved, by messing with the wrong guy. :D
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

Back in high school, I went to a fast food place with my brothers and my cousin. This family sitting at a table across from us was hollering and swearing at each other in Greek. So my cousin says to them in the Greek language, we speak Greek too. Those people were so embarrassed that they got up from there table and walked out of the restaurant. I know it was from embarrassment because the man who was the head of the family, says to his family in Greek "Shut up, and get ready to go. We're leaving. You've all caused enough problems and embarrassment for the day." It was the funniest thing we have ever experienced.

Yeah, it really freaks me out when I don't understand what people are saying! It makes me curious too!
Luckily, I speak and understand quite a lot of languages. Dutch is my mothertongue, but as there aren't many people who speak it and our country is bilingual (Dutch/French), we are being taught languages from a young age onwards. When going to high school, we already know French, then in high school we get English, 1 compulsory year of German and you can choose 2 other years of German (which I did) and Spanish. I understand some Spanish and Italian too.
When going on holiday to some country, I always try to learn a bit from the language, it's nice to say hello or thank you to people in their own language, and at least understand a bit of what they're saying.
I feel blessed to know several languages, and to learn them quickly!

yes it is good so that we can go to any place and have not need the help from any people and we cannot make our face down to other peoples and we can proudly say between peoples that we know this subject and we can even use it for our knowledge and even he can increase other knowledge by spreding it to his friend s so in my opinion knowing different language is the best quality one can find in u

That is terrible. I have had similar experiences. Once I was in a French restaurant and there were about 3 French speaking people sitting in a table close to mine. I got my food and started eating. One then said "Il y a un cochon gros." Which means "There is a fat pig." I just ignored them because that is how I am. But, it still made me angry.

that was fun..haha..this is my story. after SPM (biggest exam in secondary school), i worked at mc donald. as a newbie, i was sent to work at their ice cream kiosk. there was a day that the ice cream machine was out of order. n after being checked by my manager, and he did something, the machine need to be cool down. it would take hours. n the manager told me to be there just to give a good insight to our customers(of course i could not sell any ice cream). so, every customer that came, hear me said "im sorry, the machine is not working well, please go inside" (i said it in Malay). but one Chinese guy did not seem to understand, when we left n was like cursing at something. luckily, my friend who was taking break at that time, understand and can speak Mandarin, so he told the guy to go inside (he told him in Mandarin). the guy smiled, and went inside. so...it is a good thing to know diff languages.

That's terrible! I'm sorry that happened to you. I've never been in a situation like that since I am only fluent in english. But a french woman and her baby were riding the train with me and the mother was showing the baby everything on the train. She called me "la petite fille" meaning little girl. I thought that was cute. :]

Once I had a short stint as a despatch rider. Most despatch riders in Malaysia have low academic qualification and have a poor grasp of the English language. While going down in a packed lift, two expatriates made jokes about me in English. I was tempted to answer back but decided to let them have fun out of their own ignorance or preconceived ideas. But a friend of my spouse reacted differently.
This friend was studying at MARA Institute of Technology. She went to visit a neighbouring country to do some shopping. At a shop she asked for the price of several items. The shop assistant gave the answer and turned to his colleague and spoke in Mandarin. They spoke along the lines that Malays are poor, but like to show off by asking for the price and then leave without buying because they could not afford it. She turned around to face the shop assistants with anger in her eyes, and spoke in a loud voice, in Mandarin. Those who have seen an heard an angry woman can imagine the scenario. The shop assistants became speechless and lost a sale.

seeing all these responses made by different mylotters, i have come to this conclusion: Never use any language on a person of foreign ethnicity, especialy insults or caustic remarks, cos that fella might just understand what you just said.

I find people speaking in a different language behind your back that you not know is such a rude thing. You had been in a very disrespectful state. They took advantage on you by doing such things which is not ethical.I can say also that they are coward people for doing such. It is because they are not fair with other people. If you did wrong things then they should tell you that in a language which you also know.
If I were on your shoes I will be angry at first. I think anyone who will be in that state will naturally be angry. However, I should control what I feel and deal with them with calmness.Being angry with them and taking revenge will not be a good thing. It will just bring bad result on me and on the restaurant I am working with. I will just continue to serve them. Then I will think what is the good action to take. Perhaps, I can tell it to the owner of restaurant to tell him what happened. I think that is the best way to teach customers who have unpleasant behaviors.
I agree with you that knowing different languages is a good thing. I can say that if you will use it for doing good things then it is helpful. But in case in what happened to you in the restaurant, I think it is enough you know only limited languages.
