Change...in Higher Education
Kathryn Knight
Obviously, the economy is President elect Barack Obama's main focus as he takes the reigns from Bush in January. However, let's not forget that Obama has many other initiatives he hopes to tackle during his presidency. If you haven't heard by now, Obama wants to make college more affordable for all Americans and his plans to do so will soon affect you. So…what are his proposals for change in the collegiate sector?
American Opportunity Tax Grant
Under Obama's American Opportunity Tax Grant, all Americans will receive $4,000, fully refundable, for their college education. This amount actually covers 2/3 of a first year at a public university and one whole year in community college costs. But you don't just get $4K for going to college; there is a 100 hours community service requirement.
Simplify the FAFSA
Insert huge sigh of relief. Obama proposes to replace the complicated FAFSA from with a check box on all tax forms that authorizes the use of tax information for financial aid purposes.
Early Assessment Program Funds
Some states have developed Early Assessment Programs for juniors in college. Basically, these programs assess the individual junior and determine whether he/she is prepared for college. If not, the program provides resources to get that student up to speed. Obama hopes to encourage EAP and will provide $25 million in matching funds for states that develop the programs.
Increase in Pell Grants
During his term as president, Obama hopes to maximize the Pell Grant to the amount of $5,400.
Community College Partnership Program
Three-fold plan:
* Conduct more analysis on types of skills and technical education that are in high demand from students and local industries
* Create new associate of arts degree programs
* Reward institutions that graduate more students and also increase number of transfers to four-year institutions
Student Loans
Obama hopes to eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan Program, which has a focus in private student loans and is more expensive.

I bolded the portion that I thought was interesting. Does anyone know how to apply? and how to prove your community service? I would love to know exactly how to get on the plan! That will allow me to continue to go to college!

That would be a good set up, if they get it to go through. At least it sounds good talking about it.

You have a great idea, but for me the most important change that could be made in college is that of transparency in textbooks. Students should be given the option to purchase books anywhere, and should be encouraged to look for the best price. I believe that sites like www.wecomparebooks.com are well on their way to increasing transparency in books by allowing students to comparison shop for textbooks, finding the best possible price for any book.

I am 100% against buying textbooks from the school book store!
I never buy textbooks unless it is completley necessarry, and even when I do buy them, I find them on www.half.com, they are much more afforadble.
I think its so wrong how expensive school is to begin with, then they charge you an extra $100/book (if your lucky).
So You will never see me buying anything from the school book store!

Well that certainly is interesting news.
I would definitely do the 100 hours for the money.
I will be doing 100 hours/am working on it for my eagle project. Wonder if I could make that count. I'm only a sophmore in high school, so I guess I have some time.
Either way, thanks for sharing this information. Quite eye catching for myself.

Oh great, my whole goal is to help future and current college students. I know how expensive college life is, and every little bit helps! keep an eye out as your graduation date approaches, I am sure there will be much more information by then on how to obtain the money. Obama will have been in office long enough by then to have made a concrete plan.
Good luck on your future endeavors!

Hi
I don't mean to sound horrible in anyway but i must admit you got it hard i am living in the uk and have been for all my life and i have started my second year in college and because of the government system we have 16 to 21 year olds get free college entry so we don't have any fees when we get put into exams we get 3 attempts after we have to pay for the exams but really we only pay for college when were adults if you like but some families can claim the money for college courses back from whatever income support they have so really Britain has got the best government scheme for the eduction sector.

Yea, I have a friend that lives in Germany, and the only reason she has not moved to the states yet is because of tuition costs. She plans to finish school in Germany first. You guys are lucky! I am already $12,000 in debt for college expenses!!! AND I still have a year left of school.
