What the HECK is that?.. "Duh!" isn't exactly my favorite word to hear when someone says it to me. My husband said it to me lastnight because I told him to make sure he put the barbecue sauce on the chicken he was baking in the oven.
This is what he said to me, "DUH!"
WHAT! Are you kidding me dude?...
Sounds like fighting words to me. This is a means for WAR!.
He don't wanna mess with me. I mean really!
What does "DUH!" mean to you? and how do you OR would you react if someone said it to you? Whether they're a stranger or not.

I know its an annoying word. I hate when my friends say it. Most of them that say it are way immature. Thats because they are young and have no kids. I use to say it all the time but I rarely catch myself saying it.

OK I'm guilty. I said it too when I was younger, it was really a habit, but those days are behind me now, I think. He just busted out laughing when he seen the way I looked at him. It was almost funny, so I laughed myself.

To me DUH means you are telling me something I already know. It's rude, but it can also point out that I am nagging. I don't always know when it's nagging or if it's just a gentle reminder. If I say anything the result is Duh, if I don't say anything it's Why didn't you remind me. Can't win.

It only gets on my nerves when he says it to me. I was just reminding his crazy butt because he tends to forget some things. If he says it again we're going to war.

Thanks rocketj1. I don't like to hear a child say it to an adult either. Although I know some adults don't mind it.

OH NO! NOT you too camomom. For me, it really depends on who it is saying it me to, like if someone who hardly knows me tells me that, it would bother the crap out me, because they wouldn't know me to say that to me.
I had a best friend that use to say DUH to me all the time, and I said it to her all the time, but we had it like that, we were tight, we could joke like that without getting offended.
As far as my husband, we were just goofing around. He knows I'm crazy

I would also be offended if a stranger said it to me or if it were someone that I didn't get along with. I'd take it as if they were calling me stupid. When it's a friend or family member, I couldn't care less. It doesn't bother me.

DUH to me is like when someoen is like " your shouting the obvious moron!" I would probably feel bad for a second then pull out a baseball bat and ask if they want to say that again.

Oh that word goes back a couple of decades, doesn't it. I can remember watching Full House when one of the Olsen twins would always say duh. And then my sister seemed to start saying it all the time to me. I have to be honest, I did do the same thing to her. But we are grown now, and I'm glad to say we both seem to have been able to cut that word from our vocabulary. Because it is a very irritating word. It's kind of like saying, I know, stupid. And that's just rude.

I don't care for that because it makes me feel as though I'm dumb or something. I mean sometimes folks get a brain freeze, forget, that's human nature. but to say Duh like you an idiot or something, I try hard to overlook it big time.

To me "DUH!" means some one is telling me something that I know, but it`s the rude word for "i know :)".When a person says something and the other answers "DUH!"this means that the 1st person should know that the 2nd one knows it.

Your English is fine by me. I understood every word, and that's what I think it means.

Some people do say it as a joke. If it's an understanding between those people, then that's OK, but to say it to anyone for whatever reason, is very rude.

Oh yes the "DUH" I know that one, my niece uses that a lot. To me it means stupid..Do you think I am stupid?, you just made a stupid remark, one of those two. So I would say your husband was saying do you think I am stupid? I know to put the barbecue sauce on the chicken. It is irratating to hear this word being said to you.

Yes it was irritating right when he said it, but then it was somewhat funny when he busted out laughing at me. Oh! silly me...

then you need to say something back that makes him look really stupid. Like tell him that's really educational and did you learn it from the websters dictionary or wikipedia. He'll probably realize he learned it as a kid when he was 5!

I find DUH really rude. And i have some friends who would use that word once-in-a-while. Of course, i felt offended, but understood that perhaps, they just wanted to follow the current 'trend' of 'cool', so that's forgivable.
Anyhow, i think it's becoming a slang.

Hi miraclefreebies,
I am Asian and we are not using that expression but from the word itself, I don't like to hear someone uttering that for me, but so far, don't hear it from anyone!
For me, it sounds rude or insult, I do know just the way I perceive it!

Yeah, the word Duh is definitely sarcasm and it's not needed under any circumstances.
It's a shorter version of the old "Give me a break" statement. It's the same as saying, "Of course, you think I'm stupid?"
Sarcasm. No better word can describe "duh". I don't like hearing it, either. But, don't get too angry at your husband. I mean, we can't all be intelligent, articulate human beings, right?
I understand perfectly well why you told him about the barbecue sauce. If you're not the primary cook it's easy to forget things. Geez, my ex once fixed Christmas dinner because I was so sick I couldn't get out of bed. I told him to buy Stove Top stuffing mix to make it easier on him since he had never made a Turkey dinner before.
Guess what he forgot? The seasoning mix! All he had in the bowl was soggy bread!
So, yes, I can understand why you said what you said. Sarcasm from him was NOT called for! Heck, it's NEVER called for!
But, you know how people can be. I know it's irritating as all get-out! The best solution is just to walk away and calm down.
Whenever someone says that to me, that's exactly what I do. Walk away. Immediately. I never say a word; just leave. Oh, I might make a face like "Oh, you poor thing" or shake my head right before I walk away, but that's how I handle it.

I'm glad I didn't get ANGRY with him, I just gave him a funny look, and he just laughed, so I laughed to. I'm still grinning. See

I actually think it is ironic that I read your post. Just last week one of my kids (9 year old son)came home from school and was talking to his brother about something (who happens to be his twin in the same class) and then I hear "Duh, you were there" I think my jaw hit the floor!!! We do not watch every single word we say in our house but I could not believe that he was saying that. I am hoping that he learned that from school and not from anyone in our house (we have 6 kids). I took them both aside and explained to them that basically your are calling someone stupid when you say that to them. And to try and imagine how that person feels when you say that to them. I know alot of times they hear stuff at school and don't even know what it means or in what context to you a word so i really try to not sound like I am angry with them but do let them know that it is unkind and just because kids at school say it doesn't mean you have to.

I use that word all the time! I see it as "duh, I know" or "duh, you should know that" kind of like it's a common sense thing.
I don't know it is a word that has always been in my vocabulary, so to me it's pretty common. I do know when I was younger my mom hated when we used that word and we would always get in trouble for saying it.

Duh is usually a rude term. When someone is nagging you and then they say something that you feel is quite obvious.
Unfortunately, I will be honest and say that I do this sometimes. I really should try and stop because it is a bad thing to do.

I have used this word myself. I really don't think a person is trying to be rude, you say that instead of saying " I know what I'm doing you don't have to tell me, leave me alone! The next time wait and then ask if he has done something and if he replies with Duh" Then you can whip his you know what!
