EGO between wife and husband is it a must?

Why Ego hurts between wife and husband? As we are humans, it is natural. both have to protect their self respect. But many a times it leads to a fight or argument, even some times up to a divorce. Is it necessary? how to avoid this Ego to overcome relation? any solution for this??? What is your opinion?? this will help many relations to get going for long bond
