Ok I can tell you now that this will be a rather long post but I will try to be as brief as I can. Ok I all but the youngest of my children have been diagnosed with ADHD and have subsequently been put on medication. Which is my first issue. I am just not crazy about the concept but I do want the best for my kids.
I just think that this diagnoses is being overly relied upon in the medical community and that medication is being used as the only source of treatment. What about counseling and behavior modification, teaching our children that there are other ways of being in the world.
To begin with the diagnosis is performed usually by a family physician and that is usually based upon the interview with the parents. There is usually little input from mental health professionals.
I guess that my questions are this. Have the drug companies finally come up with the golden pill? Are we as parents making a mistake in feeding these to our kids? Are there any real alternatives?

I am not sure. But maybe you should ask those to the doctors. If your son is taking them those right now, wait and see if it has improved. How long does he has to take medication? Are there are side effects to this? If there are, are those serious enough to make your son's condition worst? I know that some medication can be trust. My mom has to take 3 medications for her whole life. One is for her blood pressure, the second is for her bones osteoropose (not sure if it's spelled correctly), and the last is for thyroid which seems to be a bit canceric so the pills help to enable it to grow. I know that after taking those, she feels alot better and she will have a longer life. I believe that medecine has improved alot but at the same time there are fears and doubt that to much chemical use could harm the body. But i am sure that your doctor won't provide something harmful to your child unless he mentions that there are side effects. So you should ask him about it and hopefully you will make the best decision for your son. Goodluck

I've been reading up on this and found this site and it's pretty interesting....I started giving my son vitamins and vitamin D and it's helped with his moods big time! I actually started taking them too and it does seem to help making a less stressful day...... http://ultrawellness.com/blog/ultramind-solution-cool-inflammation there are different things you might want to check out here and do your own research....interesting!

When my daughter was diagnosed it was done after assessment forms were filled out by myself, the school and a third party. It was diagnosed by a child development specialist and not a family physician.
While I agree that doctors tend to over-diagnose, I have to also say that if your child is not be assessed by the right physician it is well worth your time to get a more accurate diagnosis.
