Ciao - it's OUR fault -- what's your opinion?

Hi all! I've been traveling for 3 weeks now (very dizzy!!) and I just logged on to mylot and ciao and discovered that the recently lowered incentive rate of .25 cents has been removed. I was quite surprised and disappointed - Ciao was great little stream of income and for some time, I did many reviews, just for the cash incentive.
I'd like to start an open, honest and adult (meaning, let's all be mature here!) discussion about this, so we can all learn from this experience. I bet a lot of mylotters were ciao members as well and this has greatly affected many of us.
Ciao perhaps had many reasons for removing the incentive system - first of all, they did say it was only a temporary thing. It's not a sustainable system. Also, they were bought out by Microsoft (?) a few months back. Plus, the US economy, of course, a big factor. In my opinion however, I think the biggest contributor to Ciao sudden;y tightening their purse strings is US - the members. In my mind, the people running Ciao probably got wise to the members who use it for making money (remember, that's not what it was created for) and just said "We're not taking this anymore!!"
I understand that money is still money - there's nothing bad about it, wanting it, earning it or using it. I too, am guilty of using Ciao to make money; I did make quite a bit in my first month, especially since my regular writing gigs were few and far between at the time. I also understand that for many of us here, $5 a day could mean a lot or could even be a regular income for many. Like myself, perhaps a lot of us just wrote the bare minimum - 120 words and you get a buck! I'm confessing this because I felt users like myself were not helping the site, rather, we were feeding off of it. I feel particularly guilty because as a writer, I SHOULD be able to write better and longer reviews, rather than just make the minimum effort.
The only thing I could not condone was plagiarism, which I saw a lot of in Ciao. I even posted one time here on MyLot that a friend of mine, who worked for a legitimate magazine, was a victim. A lot of people here on mylot said to "leave it alone". I can't help but wonder, that if I had been more vigilant in reporting these cheaters, less people would have cheated and Ciao management wouldn't have felt like they were being cheated and kept on being generous. BTW, I eventually DID report this guy and unfortunately, he's still up there. I wrote to Ciao and their response was that they were dealing with a lot of these cheaters.
Another issue that has bothered me is something I've kept to myself, but I've been dying to discuss. I read on someone's review (on Ciao), that Ciao is not a place "learn english". While a majority of the users can write and speak english, there are many people who can't write in english and their reviews are pure gibberish. One part of me agrees with whoever posted this - First and foremost, Ciao is an english-language website. It's so obvious that these people who write gibberish are just in it for the money.
Reviews are another thing that irks me - but then I used to be guilty of giving only good to excellent reviews. However, I started noticing that people were giving good reviews and comments to gibberish reviews! Since then I started giving not so good reviews either.
So that's my 2 cents (or 2 dollars, since I've written so much). I've made these observations since I started Ciao and I've kept them to myself because I thought this would make a lot of people angry. And now it probably will make some of you irritated, but I'm just really curious if people had the same thoughts as I did. I look forward to hearing from all of you!

I have to agree with you, I think we users played the biggest part into these changes. Like I said in a different discussion related to the subject, I think the people at Ciao started looking at some of the reviews they were paying for and figured two things:
1. We are paying to someone who started a review typing "U will really like dis movie cuz is really roxxors". And such review is getting "very helpful" and "exceptional" rates, there's something wrong with our system here guys.
2. The status we've gained as a respectful site is going to be lost unless we make a move so we can force users to actually make good quality reviews.
Now, I can understand that, but I'm still not happy with the fix they decided to implement. I'm not saying my reviews on the site were good, if anything they were below average. But at least they were honest and legible, I mean, at least I cared to write entire words!
I also wanted to make the effort and become better, but now I don't see the point. Even if I become a good reviewer, nobody can assure me I'll get paid for my effort, and as a person who isn't a native English speaker, I think the effort is simply not worth it. I'd rather aim to become better than good and write for a site like Associated Content.
Like I said, it is our fault for giving high rates to reviews a monkey could've written. And I think we've hurt the average Joe who simply wanted to speak his mind in a friendly community and make some pocket cash in the process.

I also became member of Ciao a few weeks back and have observed the earnings going down and down until one day I read the news that .25 cents have also gone. You are right in saying that thee were more cheaters than genuine writers, consequently the earnings were going to these people. How long Ciao administration could take that. Throughout I've been reading that members writing gibberish reviews are getting good and very good comments from their friends. I would get messages and messages from my so called frind circles requesting to read their reviews and rate them of which I really got fed up. To me it looks that groups of people have built their own network and are commenting each other to "steal" money from the site.

Hi! Thanks for your opinion.. This is expected since I think the $1 rate was just a promotion to get many users hence making great traffic for the site. Since they've reached their target, they've reduced the rate to 25 cents. I think that also is part of their plan, much like a strategy. Well, that's just what I think.
We're all aware about the cheaters in Ciao. We have different opinion about what a good review is. Some people will say that you did a great job, but some will say you did lousy. Some like what you say only wrote gibberish things, but earn Exceptional ratings. It is so obvious that they're rating each other the same.. that's what friends are for (right?)... Ciao.com is plagued with those kind of people (cheaters for that matter).. But there are also people who are writers by profession. So those people who write good quality content hate the cheaters.
I was also tempted to write and write like one person I know. In one month, this person received 100 dollars, and is expecting his/her 2nd hundred dollars this payout. But if you'll read his review, you can say that it's not something you can consider of quality. Well, anyway, it's his/her life.
I hate to admit that I wanted to do that too. But I didn't. I'm still after the quality of my writing, and as it is said, what you say, what you do, say something about you. And I don't want to be perceived as a cheater because I am not one.
In ciao.uk, you only get paid for the rating and unlike in Ciao.com that we get a dollar or some cents for just writing. but you can see the reviews in Ciao.uk, there are lots of quality reviews. I bet they have a very discipline community out there.
Just thinking about the so-called cheaters gives me the creeps. I'm not really affected by the rate since I was really expecting that. I just can't stand reading trash. Time is money. And every second of my life is important.

I am a member of Ciao but not active and the reason for this is that I had an idea something like this might happen. It was too easy to cheat the way things were before and sooner or later something would have changed.
One good thing might come out of it - we might see fewer discussions here about it now
By the way there is an interest for all the Ciao discussions here:

Well it's certainly nice of you stand up for ciao unlike many of us who are just disappointed with the site. And I agree, I have seen many gibberish reviews on Ciao that really don't make sense at all. I do feel that if Ciao is a good company, they should be able to go through the bad economy without having to lower their rates because what i think is that a lot of people will not write for them anymore which will ultimately kill the business.
