Hi Everyone, I am having to start a no-salt / low sodium / call-it-what-you-want cooking routine for hubby, who was in the hospital for 4 days due to congestive heart failure. He is a big time junk food fan, and is pretty despondent right now (he is also on restricted fluids). I am trying to find SOMETHING that will cheer him up, but I have a couple of problems. The first problem is, we JUST got groceries before he went in, and it is all pretty high sodium, and we really can't afford to restock yet. The other thing is, I don't really have a lot of the proper seasonings on hand. So, I need to find substitutes for seasoning we have (the main one being taco seasoning), figure out some stuff Mr. Picky will eat (Kraft Mac and Cheese is a staple for him), AND figure out a way to use what we have. That's a large laundry list of "to-do's". Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there, Sorry to hear about your hubby's condition. You might want to turn to HERBS to season your foods, or make your own salt substitute (using herbs, too). Here are a couple of good links I found: http://www.homecooking.about.com/od/spicerecipes/r/blspice24.htm http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/13/All_Purpose_Salt_Substitute61138.shtml

I went from salt to sea salt. I can not give you the reason it is better, but that is what the doctor told me to use, and I'm talking heart doctor. It takes a couple times of eating it to get used to the flavor, but after that there is no difference and I actually now perfer it. A little goes a long way. I use other spices, like garlic and onion but you know that garlic salt is about the same as putting a spoon full of regular salt on something so you also have to watch the spices as they can be mostly salt too. I use Nature's Seasoning, but you also have to watch how much you use. It seems that the only way to really get away from salt is to completely stop using it. I don't think I could eat with out it. When I go to my daughter's she never used salt and that is the first thing I go to the cabinet and get when we sit down to eat. I think it is like some other things very addicting. My hubby is the same way very picky and we are from down south and we can't get some of the things he eat down there, so I have come to tricking him, if he sees it in a same wrapper or jar then it has to be the real thing.
