Many years back, before it was really "in" to be frugal I had a friend who cut hair. So, She'd cut or perm my hair, and I'd babysit her kids. Her and hubby did not go out a lot and it worked out well that the trading was not one sided. When I first moved to this neighborhood, all of the neighbors would help each other out with snowshoveling, mowing and things. We all had small yards, no room for big vegetable gardens, so we'd all plant something different and share the bounty with each other. One year a neighbor got a good recipe for tomato relish (like a salsa). So that year we all planted tomatoes, along with out other vegies to share and put them all together to make the salsa. We all bought our own canning jars and lids. Worked out well.

I would love to trade skills and things like that, but no one around here seems interested. Maybe as the economy gets worse, they'll start to think about it.

Your response got me thinking. I wonder if any local communities have "Trader groups" where people can trade services. You know, someone plows your driveway in winter,...you mow the lawn in summer. Something like that.

that would be really cool. Someone tried to start a group on Yahoo for local trading and no one responded. It's discouraging. I hope you have better luck.
