Are You Getting Any Overtime At Work This Holiday Season?

I work in a warehouse. I ship out order via UPS and FedEx. We are a little busy (Not like we normally are during the holiday season), but none the less still busy. I've been working atleast an hour maybe more of overtime a day for the past month and a half. It wasn't mandatory overtime, but I was just given the opportunity to work it so I did to help out with the workload. My boss asked me yesterday if I was going to work overtime next week and I told him no. He didn't like my response and said that he didn't see why I wouldn't work it for the extra pay. I explained to him that if I work overtime for every extra hour my babysitter has my son I have to pay her an extra $5. So, in the end, I'm not really getting paid anything extra. But since I've been working this overtime, I've been the only person working it. No one else has to come in an hour early, just me, so I told him that I would make him a deal and I would work it if he would work it. He of course said, "No way, I'm salary! I'm not going to work it unless I get something extra." I told him that he couldn't blame me then if I didn't want to work it. Is anyone else working any overtime this holiday season? If so, is it benefiting you? Are you getting anything extra out of it?

I've been working 7 days a week for the last 2 months. On the weekdays, I put in no less than 10 hours. There were some days that I worked about 18-20 hours. I am really, really tired!! The crappy thing is, I don't get overtime because I'm salary (like your boss). I only do it because my friends own this company and I really want to see them succeed. It doesn't seem like any of the employees care. It's just a job to them. I agree to take on additional responsibilities just so I know they will actually get done. Since I don't get compensated with extra money, my boss has decided to give me a paid week off. I will be going home to Hawaii for vacation next week. I can't wait! This vacation is well needed and deserved!

Well, I'm happy to hear that you will be going on vacation next week. I hope you enjoy yourself, you earned it! My mother works in a factory and they work 7 days a week. I feel so sorry for her because she works so hard and works all that overtime, but doesn't have any time for herself to spend the overtime money on something she wants. Thanks for your comment! Have a wonderful time in Hawaii! Happy MyLotting!

Wow! That's wonderful you're doing for your friend. However personally I couldn't do that much work unless it was ME owning my own business or doing a personal business venture, or like you working for family/friend's business. Have a nice day.

I work from home, so in general there is no over time. However the owner of the company I work for just passed away. He had cancer. So All I am hoping for at this pointis the company will stay afloat, so I won't have to look for a new job after the birth of my son on Wednesday.

Hello mommy how are you doing? Well, I work in a call center & we haven't been getting as many calls as we normally do. Less money if you know what I mean. So the company decided to reduce hour hours by 4. So we've been working 36 hours instead of 40 hours.
Bosses can be rude sometimes wanting over time when it's not required. It can be annoying, but the overtime can be nice. Have a nice day.

I'm sorry to hear that your hours have been cut. The economy is very poor right now. I'm actually figuring about Christmas we will be having a lay off where I work. Thanks for the comment and Happy MyLotting!

I don't have the traditional job right now, but I have in the past. I used to work at a warehouse in the shipping department and overtime was voluntary, but you got treated funny if you did not want to come in and work early, stay late, or come in on Saturdays to work. I had the same thing as you. If I worked longer then I had to pay the babysitter more and after taxes it was not worth it to me.

Yes, some employers don't realize how hard it is for people who have to pay for daycare. I know my boss's wife stays home with their 3 children, so daycare isn't something he has to worry about or pay for. Thanks for commenting!

if work at the overtime , the compensation is necessary , even in the holiday season , and should pay me more , because it in holiday .
you should to request that , that`s your legal rights and interests , everyone should abserve it .
the last one , labor contract is the most important ``

Yes, I get time and a half for working overtime, but when I have to pay extra for daycare for my son, I don't actually make anything extra by working it. Thanks for commenting and Happy MyLotting!

I worked for a government agency. When its a holiday, we don't really go to work because we won't be getting paid for it. This Dec.24 is the last day of work for this year. We'll come back and resume normal operations on January 2. Pretty long holiday for us :)
