Free websites--what do you think about them?

I was reading some articles on creating websites because I want to create a website of my own. A blog on blogger is not really satisfactory. I read that there are a number of disadvantages to getting a free website. They can put ugly banners and ads all over your website. A person trying to access your website might get annoying pop ups. Moreover, the free host might close down at any time leaving you with nothing. And you get a long, complicated, ugly web address. Do you have a free website? What are you experiences? Cheers and happy mylotting

It looks like you have had some very good advice from the people posting here. I myself have had some free websites and had been happy with them for the most part, but I do have my own registered domain thru GoDaddy.com as well, which was very cheap. Zoomshare has free websites and I was very happy with them if you would like to check them out sometime. Also,in regards to having a long domain name, I would suggest checking out Addme.com. They have a free tool called Link cloaker in which you can input your link and then put in what you want the link to say and it will shorten the link for you. I have used this successfully for many of my affiliate links as well as any other link where I thought the name was too long.Feel free to contact me if you have any trouble. Good luck.

I don't have a free website. But I know there are pros and cons. I think the pop ups help pay for the site. It might be worth looking into websites for a small fee. But there are places to do research. Here is one I heard was good. http://www.homestead.com/ Hope it is helpful.

I think it depends very much on why you need a website as to whether a free one is suitable for you. Personally, if I were running any sort of commercial enterprise, I'd avoid the free ones. Paid for ones are not expensive and I think that cost is easily justified in order to avoid the pitfalls you mentioned.

I had opened a webpage on Freewebs and I have not had any proble3ms except that i do not have a .com address. if I pay somkething upfront, i can get a .com address. it has a few templates to build up your website. i m maintaining a blog there and I find that it is quite good. I am not bothered by too many pop ups and it is quite cool.

Hi positiveminded, I don't really know how to make websites and blogs, but I do feel safer with just being here on mylot and no where else. Those popups can give your computer a virus too. Tamara
