My son met the owner of a "stray" we found years ago!

16 years ago I lived in Arizona and saw a dog walking along the side of the road. I thought nothing of it, since there were a lot of loose dogs walking around. But the next morning, there she was in my yard as I was watching my children play in their little pool! I was afraid she might harm the kids so I half-heartedly threw a couple of rocks and she just sat down and looked sad. We kept that dog and my neighbor named her Blue because one of her eyes was blue. We had her for the next two years until my eldest sons first day of second grade--some horrible monster saw Blue at the end of the driveway and swerved his car on purpose to hit her. My son saw the whole thing, I heard him scream her name and ran out to see her trying to walk toward him and then collapsing. Her neck was broken and she was dead. A couple of days ago my other son was hanging out with friends and one of them was friends with a older hunter who was there, too. One thing led to another and it turns out that Blue jumped out of his truck right around where I first saw her. He was relieved to know that she had four wonderful years with a family that adored her and also that although she died earlier than she should have, it was quick. I just thought this was a great story to share. Not many people get to meet the owners of the dogs that wander into their lives. Not all are mistreated or abandoned. The guy looked for her and we advertised her but just didn't connect.

What an incredible story! If I were Blue's original owner, I too would be thrilled to hear that she'd found a happy new home. One of the worst things about losing a pet is not knowing what happened to it.

Who would have ever thought. It is great to know that the dog was not just dropped off. He was lucky to be so loved.

Yes, I'd always felt badly for her because I thought she'd been dumped. After I saw what a wonderful dog she was I thought her owners must've been real monsters. It really makes me feel better to know that she was loved by someone besides us.

dragon54u....what a strange, wonderful, sad, heartwarming story! I can't imagine the trauma to your poor son, but I am so glad you and yours gave her a wonderful family & home, albeit, it wasn't long enough! Thank you so much for sharing!

I'm very glad you could feel all that by reading it, Blue was a wonderful dog and my son was devastated but I and his teacher helped him through it. We all feel richer for having her in our lives and I'm so glad that her owner finally learned that she had a lot of love in her life.

This is such a wonderful story to share. It is not usual to meet the real owner. And the owner thanking your family for taking good care his precious dog. It should be a relief for him knowing that there were people that gave love and care to the poor dog.

Yes, it was a relief for him. She was the best hunting dog he ever had. I wondered about that when she found a nest of baby rabbits and brought them to us gently, not hurting them. She was a retriever type dog but like none I'd ever seen. Thank you for reading!
