Does physical exertion help you sleep?

I've heard that one of the causes of poor sleep and insomnia is a lack of exercise. I'm thinking of starting a regular exercise regimen to see if it improves the quality and amount of sleep I get. Has anyone else done this, themselves? If you have, was it successful?

I am blessed to have a very nice sleep everynight (well that is if I dont drink sodas at night). And i dont have any regular exercise. But I guess the kind of job I have could alsreeady be considered a form of simple exercise.
