I own two dictionary.. although I dont use them.. In fact nobody at my house uses them... I dont know for some reasons I thought it was necessary when I was studying.. but as much as I remember I didn't use them much even then.. I think I bought it because most people own them... It is not that I dont need them at all.. I dont find it all that convinient to use...at the end of the day all you get to know is the meaning of a word.. so I rather skip that one word.. this is how I have been towards my dictionary..
How about you.. Do you own them and if yes do you actually use them?

Before it was possible to use online dictionaries, having and using a dictionary such as you describe was a necessary part of being literate. When other children were running around playing baseball and other childhood games, I used to sit down with a dictionary and study every word. I did this in part because of my love for words, but mostly because I wanted to get out of a small provincial town and have a life.
When using a dictionary, it is usually true that in looking up one word, you find two more you don't know. So, as you say, it certainly is not convenient, but convenience hardly ever puts bread on the table. Using the dictionary affords one the opportunity to be correct, which is sometimes an important consideration if one's career requires a high level of literacy.

drannhh,
When I was in school, I used to do that same thing!
I'd start by looking-up a word I didn't know, or just randomly opening the Dictionary and finding a word I didn't know. Usually in the definition somewhere there would be a word I didn't know and I'd then go look that one up.
I made sure that I understood every word in every definition I found. It was fun!
I still keep a dictionary close at hand when I'm reading but if I'm working on the computer, I just use my wordprocessor's dictionary, or an online dictionary.
Happy MyLotting!

A dictionary is kind of a fun tradition going by the wayside due to internet access. I had to have a dictionary for my son in school so I got on (this was 20 years ago!) that was a basic one - not with all the extras. Anyway, about 3 years ago when my grand daughter was 5 and in Kindergarden, I forget now why, but I let her look at the dictionary. We must have been doing some kind of school work or soemthing. ANyway, she was totally amazed and thrilled to see certain words "in the dictionary"! Her imaginarey friend was named "grand daughter" (when she was little I told her she was my grand daughter and she got mad saying "Im not granddaughter, I'm kelly!" and after that GD became her imainary friend. but she was thrilled to see the word "grand daughter" in the dictionary! THen grandmother, and grand father and uncle and all the common words that she used every day that meant something to her! IT was like a treasure trove! She underlined and highlighted and "played" dictionary often! We played school with her imaginary friends as the other students and she'd get up there and give a report about what she found in the dictinary and showed her "Friends" the word 'friends' in the dictonary and expalined it all to them... it was amazing! Get that good old "stand by" out and amaze your kids - they don't know what htey are missing! And now a day when the put common slang in the dictionary like Homer Simpsons' "duh!" and Rachael Ray's "evoo", things are right down their alley for comparison and "getting it".

hi, joystick! i own some dictionaried including a english dictionary. i don't use them often though..because sometimes it seems really inconvenient to look up a new word in a thick dictionary than get to know it by a online dictionary..just as i said, i bought them just because its a basic tool book and everyone owns one...
have a nice day and happy mylotting!

Yes, I own 3 dictionaries. The only reason I have 3 in because my daughter is in school and she needs them when she is looking up her spelling words. I do not use them hardly but they are good to have around the house.

I do have three dictionaries. One Oxford Dictionary, I also do have Thesaurus for antonyms and synonyms and also I have my own English-Tagalog (local language in the Philippines) I do have three dictionaries because I love reading books and when I am having the hard time understanding a word out of the readings I have, I simply consult those three.
It can really help you when you have dictionary. Try to use it. So that it will not be wasted. THank you! Happy posting.

Well, the dictionary is very useful, when you are curious to find out the exact or alternative meaning of some words. You might have used it without realizing that you have used it for numerous of times. I didn't remember how much I used it during school time. It seems like very little, but when I recalled back, I used it a lot . I have at least three dictionaries, because I am learning three languages here. I have one for Mandarin, one for Malay and one for English. I think nowadays, we have another options. We could buy the electronic dictionaries, which is very convenient, because they have pronunciation and translation functions. That's pretty cool, but they are expensive too. I use the online dictionary as well, because it's more handy when I am working in the office. I won't want to bring loads of bulky dictionaries to work.

we have 3 dictionary at the house. My sister bought a Collins Dictionary and Thesaurus last year. She's the one who is fond of learning new words and use it in regular basis. it's part of her daily routine to read dictionary. In my part I do use dictionary whenever I read books and novels. There are so many words to be learn and I want to broaden my vocabulary too. It is also fun to read the dictionary and find what the word means. It may not may typical routine to read the dictionary but I tried to read it once in a while.

I won one, but I barely even use it.
If I do want to find out a word I find it easier to go on this dictionary website on the web and just get a quick answer there. I guess for me it is just more convenient.

Hi!When I was still studying I used to have 2 dictionaries. One big dictionary which is just at home and one small which I can put in my bag and can bring to school.Definitely it was really so useful. Now I still have one at home for my daughters since they are still studying but they just use it seldom, because they can research or surf on internet instead of opening a dictionary.

Yes I do own a dictionary. But I haven't used it for years. But somehow I feel safe having it there - just in case. Just a psychological thing I guess. I think it is good for students at a certain stage however - it teaches skills perhaps not related to understanding meanings of words, such as the use of indexing for example.

I don't know how I would live without one! As a matter of fact I don't use them as much as I used to although I still have the Oxford Concise Dictionary laying around somewhere. I love to read and I used to refer to the dictionary on a regular basis whenever there was a word that I didn't understand. The only problem with this was the fact that I was reading very slow as a result! So, I abandoned the use of a dictionary! If you love to read and you read a lot you will find that your vocabulary starts improving automatically. You will also find that you start communicating more concisely as well. I also love to write and this also helps you without having to refer to a dictionary. I will always keep a dictionary though as they can prove to be very useful! Andrew

I do own a dictionary, and I still use it. If I am already on the computer it makes sense for me to just go to the Dictionary website to get the information I am looking for. If I am writing a letter, discussing something with my husband, helping children with homework, or playing scrabble with my mom I find it is just more convenient to grab the book. I also love books, so a computer will never be able to completely erase my desire to want to have and use books-- even if this method is viewed as antequated.
