Antivirus software is traditionally resource-heavy. Some programs are worse than others. Norton, for instance. I would suggest a RAM upgrade, as 1GB is pretty much the baseline now, and you mentioned you have only 512MB. I have never used F-Secure before but have heard mostly positive things about it. A good fast antivirus suite would be anything from BitDefender or ESET. Avast is really good (and free, the other 2 are commercial), but it is a little more resource-grubbing...

Some anti-virus programs consume lot of RAM from your system.
If there is s system with less amount of RAM then it would react slowly.
The best way is to increase RAM physically, You can also try and cofigure your virtual memory in your system.
The best thing to overcome this is yo change your habits and start using Linux :-)
Take care.

I've heard Linux was better, but I've had PCs with Windows my entire life! I couldn't even imagine how to relearn to use anything else! Except Macs... I used them in school a lot too. What makes Linux better, anyway? I mean, I know Windows tends to be glitchy (which is why I want a MacBook!) and Vista isn't worth its weight in crap... but I never really hear much about Linux nor have I known anyone who had it!

Linux is almost the same as the Mac OS.... Mac OS architectures is in Unix.... While Linux is not Unix but it is like Unix...
Mac OS is already a packaged systems of software and applications which is only dedicated only to Macs.
Linux Ubuntu distro is for PCs, Power PCs like Macs, even in PS3 or in PSP, or in any other machines that needs OS including some robotics or automation applications. Linux is robust, highly secured, reliable functionality. But you need to make advance knowledge or the guts and glory to make it more functions and stability. And it will be great. ^_^

The computer slows down after installation of an antivirus because it uses more cpu and memory to scan for files in the background. Also the guard with the antivirus uses up memory to seed that a virus does not enter by downloading or an infected pen drive.Theres no way to speed up the computer.Except defragment your hard disk and remove unwanted programs from the computer.

Antivirus software tends to be highly resource intensive in order to maintain the security of your system. So slower response is a trade off for a safe and functional system. What antivirus software are you using? When I use Windows, I like AVG Antivirus (http://free.avg.com/)...it's free and it's faster than most competitors. BUT, like some other users here, I primarily use linux and thus, don't generally worry about viruses and such. If you must use Windows, check out the AVG link I provided. Otherwise, you might consider using Mac or Linux (http://www.ubuntu.com/). Good luck!

the slow down of the computer after the installation of the antivirus all depends on the configuration of the system and when your system configuration is up to date then the slow down of the computer doesnot take place
the slow down is due to the fact that they will occupy additional memory and makes less memory available for the other programs to work so i think this is the reason

That's why I'm using now officially linux Ubuntu completely. Because you don't have to install those antivirus, antispams, antispies and so on .... and firewall is not necessary....
Soon I'm using Mac almost same as a linux Ubuntu and doesn't need also those memory suckers antivirus softwares and applications. Actually they are the real virus.

You anti-virus software uses a lot of memory when scanning you hard disk. It would be good to stop it from running when you're not connecting any secondary device on your PC or when you're not connecting to the web. In this way, the computer memory is alloted to the applications you're running.

F-Secure is not a popular anti virus program. I used it once several years ago. I was not satisfied with its performance and changed to other anti virus programs.
The RAM that you have is way too low. Presumably you are using Windows XP. This OS version requires at least 512Mb of RAM to run. Running Word for typing purposes would be fine. Adding another program which runs in the background would definitely cause a drop in performance. If yours is an integrated motherboard it means that you have less than 512Mb.
Increase your system RAM to at least 1Gb. If you intend to multitask or use graphics intensive programs then try to get 2Gb.

hello there...
there might be two causes... one is either your RAM space is too small or the anti-virus scanner is continuously scans your computer... for the first problem, if the computer slow down caused by RAM, then you should consider to upgrade your RAM cards to higher space... normally 1GB would do it... for the second problem, you have to configure your anti-virus scanner... sometimes, anti-virus scanners have a default configuration that is actively scans your every document all over again and again which is good but takes a lot of system pressure from processor and also RAM... i think this are the two probable cause on why your computer is pretty slow... try it and see whether it works or not...

Maybe its because your anti-virus is running in real time while you are using your computer. What anti-virus you are using? Because some Anti-virus are virus itself, yeah its virus killing virus, the anti-virus is also a virus who protect you computer from harmful virus.
I installed 3 Anti-virus, Avast license, avira free, AVG free.
Panda was detected as a virus, my avira, avast, and avg detected it as a virus.

You probably just got one that was too advanced for your computer. Older computers don't have as much memory, so they can't handle the newer products. My computer is awful with that sort of thing. (It's a dinosaur, but it was free!) You can always upgrade you RAM if you want it to go faster. It's usually an inexpensive fix to a slowing down issue!

If we install anti virus programe, lot of activities happens inside the computer.New entries are added in to the os registry. The memory hard disk are scanned, because this performance degrades a little.

System is slow down by antivirus due consumption of resources.
Let us take a example you install a new antivirus. After installing and rebooting your antivirus will active and will start scanning your system. This scanning requires part of your RAM and processing. Some antivirus are look haveir because they performe a deep scan and some have tecnology to do scan while consuming less resources.
You can increase your computer speed by adding the files you trusted to exception list. Doing this antivirus will not scan that type of files.
Another way to do is set your scanning level normal or deep scan. Deep scan will be slow and will require more memory.
You can increase performance by customizing you antivirus in your own way rather than to uninstall a antivirus and install a antivirus of poor quality which require low resources

pls let us know which antivirus system are you using and what is ur system configuration.
If it is bitdeffender then surely ur computer going to be slow.you should always careful about available resource of ur computer and antivirus you are using. If there is combination of antivirus+firewall+adware then system will go slow. The faster and reliable antivirus is ESET NOD32.
You should turn off any start up scan of your antivirus if enabled.Hope these things may clear your confusion.Thanks.
